Why do people hate Disney?

Adults don’t have to like it, but they can.

It’s not just for kids.

I didn't mean it as an insult.

I've never been (my parents couldn't afford it), but I plan to take my kids within the next year. If I like it, great, but if not, I'm not going to be a jerk about it, either. Some people appear to feel personally attacked by their Disney experience. It's odd.

There’s a huge amount of nostalgia attached to Disney for a lot of people. That’s why they have that reaction.

Walt Disney designed Disneyland to be a theme park adults and kids could enjoy. It really is meant to be for the entire family.

I went to Disney for a single day with the kids while en route to Miami to visit family. I think that was enough for us. But I can see how you can spend $$$$$ and go really overboard will everything that Disney has to offer. Disney has mastered some luxe family packaging and can really make it appealing - and I say that as someone who vowed to never go to Disney. In the end, we ended it at just one day and I'm glad that we did or I'd have burned serious money.

Kids had fun, though.

Exactly! Kids have fun. Some families are willing to spend the money to have a very kid focused vacation, and some are not.

I am willing to spend the money to have a very kid focused vacation, but Disney isn't my kid's choice. So...

And some adults like it too.

And I find going to the Caribbean—most of the islands anyway—immoral. You’re supporting labor exploitation.

Meanwhile, I love going to Disney, Europe, and Asia.

Ummm...no.

Having lived in a Caribbean nation, they have lower wages, but you're not exploiting workers there by going there. That doesn't make sense.

Then why does this exist?

You realize you linked to a touring company, right? In the Caribbean? Are there more and less responsible tourism models in the caribbean? Yes. Are there more and less exploitative tourism models anywhere in the world, including the US? Yes. Does that mean it's wrong to travel to the Caribbean? No one but you is saying that. The link you gave to a tourist company that makes money off of trips to the Caribbean certainly doesn't advocate that position.

Hot. Crowded. Caters to an on-the-go type a personality. Not relaxing. Expensive. Fake. Manufactured. Inauthentic.

But also on the flip side - imaginative, immersive, fun, exceptional customer service.

It not supposed to be real.

Walt Disney INTENDED to create an escape from reality.

I am talking about non covid times.

I’ve only taken the kids to Disneyland. My kids are younger and disney world seems overwhelming. Plus I love California and can’t stand Florida.

Oh and also we’ve never been in the summer. Have only been in February/March. Basically I have a conference is california every year. We tack on two days of Disney after the conference. One time I got lucky and conference was actually in aneheim in a Disney hotel (forgot which one but the one with the chip n dale theme).

Yeah. My kids somehow saw through the morbidly obese scooter riders gnawing on turkey legs.

“Magical” is not what my kids called it. It was fine for a day; they went and enjoyed. But give them a dude ranch or sailing vacation any day over standing in lines in the hot humid.

PP we do this too. Kids are young so we don’t have to deal with school schedules. We go to Disneyland not Disney World and we go on an off season. Weather is cooler, tickets cheaper (though not by too much), and there are very little crowds. Wouldn’t do it any other way. I’m gonna avoid Disney World until kids are much older and hopefully only do it once. It just seems so overwhelming to me. Maybe when the kids are more independent. But just like now we would never go during high season. Maybe during thanksgiving break or something like that one year .

Yeah, fake always seems to me like a weird criticism. It's like going to see a movie about elves and unicorns and then complaining it was too fake. I actually dislike Epcot, for this reason -- it is intended to be sort of real, and it's fake. I will say that Epcot is a life long disappointment for me, as I have a real interest in world cultures. I went to one of the last real world's fairs, and LOVED it so much, as it was a way for a kid that couldn't really travel much to be able to travel around the world in a day by going to the different pavilions sponsored by different countries. One of the most impressive memories of my childhood. That's what Epcot was intended to be, and it's just such a major fail. We often skip it, although my spouse really likes the California soraing ride, and the kids like Testrack, so sometimes we do it on our departure day as a part-day.

I think I am a type A vacation personality, though. I hate going on a vacation and just sitting around. I can sit around all the time in my nice house at home, on my comfy couch with my remote and lots of books from the library. If I go through the hassle to go someplace, I want to see, do, eat, etc. things I can't do in my house. I'm not at all Type A otherwise, though!

The heat is something though -- we went once in October and I decided that was too hot! November to February only for me.

sure. But hiking through slot canyons in Utah or canoeing across a lake in in Northern Michigan is also an escape from reality, and those are more "real" than Disney...

The need to get the app and reserve everything in advance was a major pain in the ass. Standing in line was a pain in the ass. Dealing with my kids being overstimulated and continuously and the verge of a meltdown was a pain in the ass. We paid for my sister to spend the day at Disney and she hated every moment and that was a pain in the ass. We paid $40 for VIP parking lot, because the parking is a pain in the ass. It's so freaking hot and humid in Florida and that's a pain in the ass. Florida and Florida people are a pain in the ass. My 4 year old was terrified by every ride, including the spinning teacups, and that was a pain in the ass. Thank god we brought a stroller for my 4 and 6 year old, but lugging that eveyrwhere and parking it with 862 other strollers at every ride was a pain in the ass. We made the mistake of planning for a half day at Epcot, and it sucked, and that was a pain in the ass.

The water park we went to for one day there was good, because we didn't have to wait in any lines, and the kids had continuous fun all day. They also really enjoyed the plane ride home.

The next year we went to the Bahamas instead, enjoyed the beautiful beach, visited the megaresort down the beach for fun stuff like like their apiary and huge aquariums with sharks and rays. The kiddos and grownups had a great time!

I found your post kind of hilarious.
