I can do this all day because they all mostly played HS.
In fact, I encourage you to look up the All-Met HS kids and see how they are doing in their recruiting process. |
Messi never played High School soccer. |

Messi didnt play in the US "Development" Academy either.
However, he did receive steroid injections. Maybe that's the answer. |
Pulisic never played High School Soccer |
Actually financials did play into the decision to go back. PDA practices 2x a week and then charges extra for a 3rd practice so coaches can supplement their income. They just recently starting introducing some changes at the tail end of the Spring season. DA dictates 4x a week practice, granted not everyone does that. PDA’s coaches are contractors and not FT salaried employees of the club. PDA was in a place where they had to increase # of practices with DA but not increase fees. Coaches were training more but getting paid less and certainly not happy. Combined with being a founding member of ECNL, the same HS they so discreetly discouraged previously, they decided to go back to ECNL. And yes 2 teams to a founding member...they have pull. |

BDA people love throwing Pulisic name out their as their crowning achievement. Once you dig deeper you will find that the BDA did not cultivate him. The BDA has been around for 12 years. It's a failure. The USMNT is shameful. And who is behind it all? The USSF!
At least three FIFA world players of the year winners played High school soccer. The US darling of this World Cup, Rose Lavelle, played high school. Do I believe that HS soccer made these players what they are? Nope. Do I believe that club soccer made them what they are? Nope. Do I believe that BDA made Pulisic what he is? Nope. Human development is so much deeper. |
+1 Of course financials played a big part. PDA wasn't losing players to competing ECNL clubs while they were in DA so that kids could play High School. ECNL and ECNL clubs are simply marketing High School as a point of distinction between the two leagues but PDA is PDA and as such the players will fall in line with the club whether they are happy or not. For PDA this was all about money and not some real firmly held ideology that HS Soccer is so important. There was heavy financial incentive for PDA to move back. When Real Colorado and Top Hat tried to get the same deal this year as Michigan and PDA have they were turned down by ECNL so they went all in with DA instead. They wanted to field two teams and when they were not allowed to they simply left. Their decision was not based on ideology either regardless of what any boiler plate press release says. |
I didn't mention a thing about BDA and Pulisic. This was about High School. But, Pulisic and his age are really the first generation to have been exposed to BDA and are now coming through the system completely. Not Pulisic but his general cohort. But to say that Pulisic was not in DA is also misleading. He was and it was at a DA event that Dortmand scouted him. |
None of it is based on ideology. It’s all money, power, and influence. |
what this statement ignores is that our USMNT would be significantly worse without the BDA and the reason is that ECNL and every other league has all the problems of the DA PLUS less training, less coaching education, less referee education, more overload, and more crappy soccer competition in general. If the BDA didn't exist, none of USSF's numerous problems would magically be fixed. The BDA addresses some (albeit not nearly enough) of the problems associated with youth soccer in this country. The GDA will solve those same problems and for this reason is better than ECNL or any other league even if the DA is not anywhere near perfect. |
And yet some nations seem to be able to do better at human development than we do. We have a culture of individual achievement that likes to try and discount the role that society and systems have in the development of greatness. There are always circumstances outside of the individual's control that played a greater impact in the persons rise to greatness than we like to acknowledge. |
Is the USMNT better because of the DA or because players are playing in professional academies now (mls)? |
Why does it have to be mutually exclusive? |
