If the non-Asian kid met the minimum cutoff for GPA/SAT, I'd choose him/her every day of the week. Hopefully I'd be able to choose both as they are both deserving of admission. However, If there were 10 spots available and I had 10 of the first example and only 1 of the second, then one of the first kids (Asian) would have to be rejected.

What you're describing is affirmation action based on SES. There are plenty of Asian applicants that would fit your example of kid from the projects (Cambodians, Hmong, Vietnamese to an extent).

All that stuff you say about the current immigrants was said about all the ones that preceded them. including both my Italian and Irish great-grandparents.

People want to come here because they want to be American, not because they want to change America. And having a racial balance at top colleges that reflects American society is one of the best ways I can think of to promote assimilation. Maybe THE best. You know it is true.

I am an immigrant. Most people move here for economic reasons and capitalism and not for the American way of life. This surprised me as well.

The other thing the Asians are missing is the schools need a lot more than straight A students and they need all majors filled.

I need athletes, tour guides, actors, folks to fill less popular majors like LA, Sociology, Fine Arts, History etc.

The school is a city. And if anything perhaps Harvard should throw out the GPA and SAT/ACT as many indicator.

Harvard has way way more Asians than Africans Americans admitted each year.

Economic reasons and capitalism are the American way of life! The ability to change your class level by virtue of your efforts and not status of birth was a rare state when it was established.

Life's not fair. Get used to it. The Asian kid is not responsible for American inner city woes. BTW hardly seems fair that America with 5% of the world's population consumes 25% on the world's energy resources. Hardly seems fair that millions starve around the world while Americans grow fat on an abundance of food.

+1 I'm Asian, lived in a roach infested 1 br apt housing six people at one point, born to uneducated parents. I'm also really small and not athletic. Never could get straight As because of PE. Why didn't they lower the bar, literally, for my short unathletic physical limitations?

It is ironic that blacks wanted to ride the same buses that wanted to make them sit at the back or attend white schools that did not want them and they thought were terrible and were suing ( i.e. Brown vs Board of education)

Jews don't tell colleges they are Jews. And Asians can be Jewish by the way. Ivanka Trump is Jewish and so was Sammy Davis Junior.

And Asians dont have to tell their colleges they are asians. And not all Asians are even of Asian descent. Name your kid William Remington instead Ching Sung Soo if worried.
