Emulate them? Are you kidding? The Jewish people in this country would hate that. That would mean that all the top jobs at elite universities would be given to blacks and they would only promote other blacks. Most everyone in power in the media, banking, and Hollywood would be black. Harvard, Yale, etc would be mostly black. Jewish people will never let this happen. The difference is this - that while the Holocaust and slavery broke apart families - separated men from women, husbands from wives, brothers from sisters - the Jewish culture, b/c the Holocaust period was shorter than slavery, could still focus on intact families. The family unit and the traditions surrounding a shared religion keep people together.

Agree, and let's not act as though the Jews suffered through a single four-year period of horrific treatment, and that was that. They've been persecuted, enslaved, and murdered going back 2000 years.

Give the Jews a little credit. They emphasize studying above sports in order to get into top colleges, they value and get advanced educations, and they make sure they're established before having children. These are all wonderful traits. Blacks shouldn't be jealous of them, they should imitate them!

B) Holistic admission accounts for more than just grades and GPA because schools want interesting, dynamic, students who aren't just book smart - regardless of race. I know I am glad the school I went to looked at more than just grades and test scores.
C) Kids drop out of schools for all sorts of reasons but not one of them is affirmative action. You are spewing nonsense. In fact, if schools also focused on supporting kids once they were admitted and not exposing them to the kind of prejudiced views you hold, they might feel more included in the college community.

After all, they were admitted with lower grades and scores that would have put them in the reject pile if they were white, Asian, or Jewish. This very reliable source says that the lowest completion rate, defined at graduating four years from when one started a specific institution, is lowest among black males (40%) and highest among Asian females (75%).

it's a fair argument as to whether we continue to "owe" blacks preferential treatment (and if so, for how many more generations), but AA is a costly policy, admitting students who are less likely to graduate and denying students more likely to graduate.

Are you claiming there are hoards of white high school students who don't get into college at all because of AA? So they end up not getting a college education? Seems to me that is an applicant can't even get into a single college perhaps he wasn't ready for higher education.

No, but a black applicant admitted to a top-tier school under lower standards, where the white student is rejected, is definitely costing that white student a slot. Now you can argue that the white student can go to a 2nd-tier school, but I am saying why should the black kid get to go to the better school and the white kid to a lesser school despite the fact that the white kid had higher grades and scores? Patently unfair and racist.

When the white kid suffers from centuries of racism, jim crow, housing discrimination, voting disenfranchisement, negative stereotyping, poverty, drug infested gloomy neighborhood, getting stopped and shot by cops for no reason, and lack of positive role models THEN whites can expect the same help as blacks.

Black kids trying to get into college haven't suffered from centuries of racism. They're 18 years old, and they, and their parents, and and their grandparents have been given preferential treatment in admissions. And there's a lack of positive role models? Is that the whites' fault, too?

Blacks really should look toward the Jews and emulate them, rather than resent them. Study how they overcome terrible prejudice, slamming doors (good luck getting into an Ivy in the 50s), mass murder of their cousins, and STILL managed to form strong family units and get an education. Ask yourself: what are Jews doing differently than blacks that have helped them succeed in spite of antisemitism? And there's your answer.

1) Southern universities were only forced to desegregate in the early 1960s. I can assure you that did not mean that black applicants were immediately given "preferential treatment" in admissions. The grandparents of an 18 year old today would have been going to university in the late 1960s and again, I can assure you at that point that they would not have been given "preferential treatment" in college admissions.

Marriage between different races was still illegal in some states until 1967 when the Supreme Court struck it down. That is only 50 years ago. The fact that the Supreme Court had to strike it down means that at that time racial discrimination was still going strong.

I grew up in flyover country in the 1970s and racial discrimination was rife back then and quite out in the open. Nowadays the people I grew up with won't come out directly with their racial bias the way they did in the 1970s, but it's there all right. You think that blacks who were born after the Civil Rights era were automatically shielded from racial prejudices that were hard wired into whites for generations?

All the white people clebrating this need to take a minute and realize that if college admissions were truly race blind, there would be fewer whites and fewer URMs, and a lot more Asians. Right now, Asians are the group that takes a hit on college admissions, not whites. And both of the big lawsuits out there on race based admissions are brought by Asian Americans-- not whites.
