| I’m seeing a lot of packed U.S. stadiums and massive displays of passion from traveling supporters. The world has turned up for the World Cup. I’ve watched every televised match but the Australian overnight one. |
Duh... would you expect anything less out of the World Cup? |
Are you serious? The US v. Paraguay game had tons of empty seats. Also there was a podcast recently that talked about pricing and they interviewed fans in Argentina. Many were flying here but could not afford a game. |
Cost of attending a game is a problem. Enthusiasm and empty seats, not so much. |
Of course legally Balogun is American but it is farcical to try to argue he is the epitome of an American. His parents are not American. His mother was visiting relatives in the US when she was pregnant and couldn’t fly back to England bevause the airline refused to let her board. So he was born in Brooklyn and spent 5-6 weeks in the US before they could return to England. So his parents aren’t American, he only lived 5-6 weeks as an infant in the US, and he has no ties to America. You can’t be the epitome of a culture you never lived in, your parents were never a part of, and never had shared cultural experiences. His playing for the US is 100% practical. He represented England for U-17, U-18,and U21. He decided to switch two years ago to play for the US, most likely because he realized he would most likely never be a starting striker for England as that is Kane’s spot (and the line up England uses is only one striker). And there was a good chance he wouldn’t even be a bench player. So he switched to play for the US. I hope someone explained the massive tax consequences of his decision. |
I would not be going to Morocco anyhow. The same process for non World Cup entry should exists. Or, better yet, a more secure process. |
| I don’t understand why Canada and America are host nations. Soccer isn’t a huge event in either country. It should be Mexico as the host. The three nation idea is dumb |
The idea is to grow the sport in north america. marketing is everything |
Our best athletes are steered into football and basketball because they are more aesthetically pleasing to watch as a fan and therefore more marketable and more profitable sports. The World Cup is a fantastic global event but it won't change the fact that soccer/futbol is less marketable than football and basketball. |
DP. It's a good thing you don't work in marketing or advertising. |
When the best athletes in the US start choosing "soccer", soccer will become marketable in the US and the US will be able to compete for World Cup titles. |
The more intelligent athletes play soccer. The less intelligent athletes play football and basketball. Americans don’t understand the athleticism necessary to play soccer at the D1 level. Check the team GPAs at D1 schools that are competitive in these sports. The difference is not about “the best” athletes. It’s about money. |

Iran coach says team ordered out of US right after 2-2 draw with New Zealand in World Cup opener I mean, this is how you get the world to turn on you, if it hasn't already. |
Soccer isn’t as big of a money machine for the universities. Let’s be honest, the football and basketball players are there to make money so they do bare minimum work in class. |
The US already does and has won World Cup soccer. France 2019 |
