Navy Elementary - Principal Resignation

Why can’t the parents drop their kids off as soon as the straightaway hits? They aren’t letting their kids out at the top of the hill!

One thing the previous principal did right was stand near the top and wave at people to get them to let their kids out.

We moved here from an elementary along a street where the kiss & ride was a dangerous mess. Worse than Navy. Kids darting across the street through the line, cars butting into line, parents PARKING and getting out to escort their kids to the door, etc. It was a disaster. The principal retired, and the new principal took the kiss & ride on as an important safety priority. She was out there with staff (rotating but some were always there) every day, rain or shine. They opened doors for parents and did not let the parents get out. They kept the line moving. The turnaround was incredible. Sharing to say that change is possible regardless of the parent community/behavior.

+1 Same at our school. At pickup, you had a sign (printed in big letters by the main office) that had the name of your kid on it. The kids would all stand on the sidewalk and were called as their parent pulled up. There was no darting of any kind. And older walkers could sign up to be Kiss and Ride patrols. They would signal cars to move up and open car doors. It was a win-win for kids who felt left out of the bus patrol program. Oh, and you weren't allowed to sign kids out less than 15 minutes before the final bell in order to keep the driveways cleared and to allow office staff to go help with dismissal. It was a great system.

Wow! Someone has some REAL hatred in their hearts towards certain families. Sadly, it is not surprising though.

+1 there’s a reason kiss n ride exists. Not everyone can get to the bus stop easily. And for some, that actually takes longer and having to stand there in the cold for a late bus is not worth it. Also, maybe the PP’s kids don’t have after school activities which necessitates the use of kiss n ride. And finally, some kids are walkers but parents may have to drive them. I don’t get the blanket “just take the bus” message. It doesn’t work for everyone. How about we fix the kiss n ride? The solution isn’t “just don’t use it.”

No. Posting on DCUM won't solve anything. If you're a parent experiencing issues, then you know what they are. If you're not experiencing issues, then be glad. Let the interim principal handle the issues. She has stepped into situations like this before.

Then why did PP state there are MAJOR issues? Why do that to begin with?

Dunno, but they're finally bringing FCPS school police in to deal with the kiss and ride issues starting today.

They described it as “school security” vs actual police. And I didn’t see any such thing and was there this am. I did notice they refused to open the doors to students at 10:20 am, which I thought was a d*ck move. The email said doors would be open at 10:25 am l, but they relented and allowed students in at 10:23 am. As a result, yes, the kiss n’ ride line was backed up so far like I’ve never seen it. Also, some of the problem is that parents wait until they are close to the doors to drop off instead of starting at the top of the hill in the kids b ride line. And then of course you have the idiots who go into the parking lot in the wrong lane, and who try to take a left into the kiss n ride line from Thompson. Have yet to even see the interim principal so no idea if they are aware of this. But if they want the line to go faster they need to have parents let their kids out further away from the doors at the top of the hill.

Placing a sign there or a teacher would go a long way to help.

Having a police officer direct traffic onto west ox would help as well, and cut down on the people who park on the side of the road. Had way too many near misses from people cutting infront of vehicles to park there.

Too many people also pull through the kiss and ride and then park to let their kid out and block the flow. Need to get the new temp prinicpal more involved in this process.

I am confused why you don't think it is nice to open the kiss and ride early at 10:20 when they told you it would open at 10:25. Seems pretty clear what the instructions were.

I don’t understand why they would not open the line at 10:20 am when the line is so long. It would help relieve congestion and get the kids in sooner - isn’t that what we want?

Hey non-AAP mom, how do you know that the kiss and ride is being used by AAP kids unless you were there also using the kiss and ride line also? Ah ha! Caught you! I guess only certain people are okay with you to use the kiss and ride line huh? Don’t be too sad you guys were able to at least get rid of the last principal.

Because the people who work the KNR line have other responsibilities and tasks inside the school.

Not at 10:20 am they don’t.

Many years ago, I lived in a township in PA. That town had a rule that all kids would ride the bus. Even those in walking distance. Now, I understand why.
