It actually won't. It will encourage people to keep old, used cars for longer periods of time. They will be unsafe and more polluting relative to newer cars.

Not a joke - if you keep these tariffs on for decades, the American roads will start to look like Cuba. Old cars from the 1990s and 2000s being constantly fixed by poorer Americans who can't afford $50-80K for a new minivan, SUV, or truck.

This is the norm in most developing countries. I noticed it in the Bahamas that most people were driving around early 2000s beaters.

Are we a developing country???? Are we trying to look like one??

Who did they vote for?

The UAW and the USW both endorsed Harris. The membership voted Trump.

I guess the membership now understands that Trump’s fevered dream that tariffs will bring back U.S. manufacturing is a fantasy.

And it’s weird, because if that were the case, Biden would have done it. No president in U.S. history has been as pro-labor as Biden.

He led an electric car push that destroyed union jobs.

Elon is the one with electric cars and no union jobs, dear.

It’s a shame that no one in the media thought it worthwhile to explore Trump’s proposed tariffs during the campaign. Instead we had story after story about the 20 undecided voters in Pennsylvania.

Now we on are the road to being one.

And I am driving around in my 2001 Toyota, because I'm afraid of dh losing his job and we don't want to pay 30k+ for a decent car.

Elon's company is successful, and basically cornered the market.
Biden pushed the other car companies to follow along, and they are hurting.

Well, when picking dictators we sided with loser Russia, instead of siding with smart, wealthy China. So, the felon’s ineptitude and racism costs us in the end.

Here’s another off ramp the GOP could take…but alas I’m sure they’re getting comfortable in their weakness.

Well, Trump is basically pushing the rest of the world to buy China’s awesome electric cars over Tesla now, so well done MAGA! There also goes our foothold in green technology. Let’s also not forget that Trump alienated the US auto industry by promoting Tesla cars and stock. All this winning…pfft.

It’s so weird. Honestly cannot figure out what the GOP play is here. Manufacturing is going to be slaughtered by these tariffs and it’s in heavily GOP districts. They have to be smart enough to know that tariffs have never worked in the history of the world. Never.

Same for agriculture. Which is already hurting from the federal grant cuts.

What is the GOP goal here???

To avoid being primaried in the mid-terms by someone “more MAGA”. It’s a cult of personality. Whatever Trump says must be obeyed. It has nothing to do with policy.

Tesla is not successful. Have you looked at the earnings report the last three cycles. The company is hemorrhaging money and people are not buying the cars. Tesla and Wall Street hailed Tesla as a technology company and not a car company for years. That’s why Tesla traded with the tech companies, Magnificent 7, opposed to trading with the automotive sector. Tesla has been propped up with government gimmes. Tesla is not a tech company. Wamo beat them to the punch in self driving and the Chinese has now produced faster charging stations.
