Slow in coming but he’s taking responsibility and doing the right thing.

I wish all the other places that will be affected by assault weapon mass murders in the future would just figure it out now and help prevent the next massacre.

I hate that he was fine to ignore and distance himself from all the dead Sandy Hook kids, all the dead Vegas and Orlando innocents. But he may well lose his seat with this announcement so I appreciate his late courage.

He wasn't in Congress for Sandy Hook. Maine is big gun country and this is a BFD if he's changed his tune. Americans are sick and tired of this!

This is PP - I live in Maine. I’m living this event. He was alive during Sandy Hook and that should have been enough for him, and everyone, to come out against assault weapons. But yes, it’s a big deal to change his tune, and again, he could be voted out due to it if enough people aren’t as deeply impacted as Jared is.

I am a military spouse and disturbed that this guy was hearing voices, having psychotic breaks etc. and .... going about his day? Have they determined why he was not receiving treatment through the military, and why he had access to an assault weapon? Was it acquired illegally? This sounds like a fail on so many levels. And I abhor the loss of life. So much sad news.

Idiot: Access? How about walking into a gun store. Acquired illegally? Why? AR-15s are perfectly legal.

After all, who are we to say a mass shooter can't have the gun of his choice?

Illegally due to his documented poor mental health.

Again, Maine has no red flag laws.

Yes, that type of law might interfere with a white man’s right to own an assault weapon-a right which trumps everyone else’s right to live.

I understand you are profoundly angry. He sounds like he is completely psychotic. However, that has nothing to do with being white. I hope they catch him soon.

Actually race has a lot to do with assault weapon ownership and mass shootings of this type. Most are not psychotic-just angry white guys.

This guy (Robert Card) is a big MAGA/Fox/Jim Jordan/Tucker Carlson/right-wing militia follower. He wanted to show the world his "rage" by shooting children in a bowling alley with his AR-15. America The Beautiful.

He told them straight up that he was hearing voices and was going to commit a mass shooting. He was failed by the VA, the system, whoever didn’t take him seriously. This is not about MAGA or anything else. It’s about a complete failure of the system to help someone. Welcome to our government.

I guess it is never the time to ban guns, but time to dismantle the government. Why are the police and swat teams out there hunting him down? Shouldn't the MAGA 2A nuts out there showing their chops and being the good guy with a gun?

Please. The "good guys with the guns" concept is a just a BS NRA talking point.

Ok. This is one of the huge fails then. I hope they will also address this. We own a gun, and I am happy to have checks, required training, jump through every hoop and have guns removed from people too. Thank you for answering my question.

You’re welcome. We also have one gun in the house, stored unloaded in a combination safe. We are in Maryland and my husband went through a training course and a rigorous background check. There’s no reason why anyone else shouldn’t have to either.

Oooohh, a rigorous background check, you say? Well, all is right with the world, then. Anyone who doesn't have any wants or warrants or is not subject to a current restraining order can buy an AR-15 (one a month if they want!) perfectly legally. It's the mass shooter's favorite. Nothing to be concerned about!

I am the PP, PP was responding to. By all means legislate that. I am fine with AR-15 in a town or city armory to be unlocked for the citizens to use in case of attack. I don't see why anyone needs one at home either.

This is how I see it. The man clearly had mental health issues, said he was hearing voices, and that they were telling him to commit a mass killing. That’s, in part, why they held him. A mass attack like what happened in Israel is the perfect trigger for someone in the military to come ‘to the defense’ of the public. For all you know, the voices were telling him that the innocents in that restaurant and bowling alley were Hamas terrorists and it was his job to kill them. The military clearly knew he was armed. Where were the Feds? He’s clearly the “domestic terrorist” they are after, so where were they?

This is not about the right for gun ownership rather the ability and knowledge to use a gun safely. You'll never be able to magically wipe out (at least not now!) gun ownership - too many out there. And having spent years fighting the gun lobby, I think it hasn't been energy well spent. To rid guns from the street is a pipe dream.

BUT we can look at who gets the guns, track them and put a process by which they have to legally follow in order to continue to own them. I may not be able to take away the right for someone who suggests they have a right to own in this country, but I can make them follow specific processes to try to promote public safety and abilities to use them the wrong way. There's more than 1 way to skin a cat so to speak

I’m not sure if you’re responding to me (13:35) but I may not have been clear. We will make no progress, on any aspect of this, as long as the GOP has enough power to block legislation at the state and federal level. They will allow no laws about tracking, public safety, mental health, nothing.

I come from a hunting family. I don’t give a rat’s if people own hunting rifles (but if you invited my kids over, I want to know they’re in a safe). But people who insist on an arsenal of guns that require no aiming, that can tear humans apart and make pink slime of little children’s bodies, that essentially have endless ammo - this is not acceptable. This is not fun. This is unsafe. It is tearing America apart and I believe that’s what the GOP wants.

“Require no aiming.”

Don’t know much about firearms, do you?

DP. That was easily understood. The AR-15 is a popular gun because it is easy to use, fun, and almost point-and-shoot. Aiming in the general direction is good enough.

You haven’t got the slightest idea what you’re blithering about. “Point and shoot?” “General direction?” An AR15 is a rifle. It shoots an approximately 22 caliber bullet. A good example can shoot into an inch at 100 yards if properly handled by a competent marksman. The more average performance with an average shooter and average rifle would be 4-6 inches at 100 yards. These results require close, careful sight alignment, breath control, trigger control, recoil control, consistent head position on the stock, a stable shooting platform, etc. Point and shoot will result in random, if any, hits. General direction shooting the same. Myths and ignorance notwithstanding, there is a lot more space around targets than on them. Sportsmen spend years perfecting their skills and thousands of dollars on customized firearms and sights to shrink their shot groups and win competitions.

Congratulations, all your mass shooter friends are competent marksmen.

Seriously. The PP is insufferable. Myths and ignorance notwithstanding, mass shooters are not shooting from 100 yards while exhibiting their consistent head positions and great control over their weaponry. They are shooting from feet away and randomly blasting through bodies so that it takes days to identify people in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Point and shoot in general direction work just fine in a classroom or bowling alley.
Congrats to PP to accepting the loss of innocent lives in exchange for jollies at the gun range.

I feel like every time there's a mass shooting (the fact that that's such a hum drum thing to type is alarming, but I digress) the gun enthusiasts come into the thread with the sole purpose of flexing their knowledge of weapons. It's almost like they're gleeful that they get to have a platform to spew this (at the end of the day) really worthless knowledge of the inner workings of assault rifles.

Someone will tell me that I just used the wrong terminology, and guess what? I don't care. I care that someone who shouldn't have access to guns did and killed a lot of people. The fact that there is such a large group of "gun enthusiasts" is the problem. Easy access is the problem. Mental health issues aren't the issue. Easy access to guns while experiencing mental health issues is the problem.

But I'm so sick of these "pfft, you don't even understand the inner workings of an AR-15, go to a gun range you simpleton" posters. GTFOH with your sh!t. No one but military should be experts in those, not randos on the internet thinking they're going to come into a thread about a lot of dead people and school us on the mechanics of these weapons.

Because, naturally, there’s always going to be plenty of time for “the citizens” to hop in the car, drive down to the “town or city armory,” stand in line, appear before their appointed betters, present their credentials, receive their bought-and-paid-for personal property, drive home, clean and lubricate their firearm, load it and make ready, and then respond to “attack,” which doubtless will be on hold pending the “citizen’s” completion of these ministrations.

Tell that to the folks about a mile and a half as the crow flies from my house in a quiet suburb who were suddenly confronted the other day with a broad daylight home invasion by multiple individuals armed with guns.

People have the right to keep their belongings where they want to, not where they are told to. Freedom isn’t about “needs,” especially “needs” determined by some overarching authority armed to the teeth with the very weapons it seeks to withhold from its “subjects.”

Concepts like yours are frankly delusional.

This is very reasonable.

Plus red flag laws obviously.

Maine doesn’t have a red flag law. This is absurd.

Dem state

This shouldn't be a state-by-state thing.
