I agree PP. But I also think it's more than just about being made uncomfortable--I really think that Republicans are being force-fed the notion that all the groups that are asking for respect, equality under the law, and equality of opportunity are actually trying to take something away from them , be it money, jobs, other resources, college admission, etc. And a corollary of that is that they think those "other" people don't deserve it or, that they're trying to pull something over "regular" Americans. |
I hope the family wins a civil suit and takes him for everything he has. That's the only real justice victims seem to get anymore. |
+1 it's also evident in the school-related laws Republicans are pushing. Always framed as "protecting the children", don't want "the children's feelings hurt." But you know they don't mean ALL children. They are fine with not protecting/hurting the feelings of children who are not White+Straight+Cisgender. |
PP here. Of course, we should do and be better. We should also be encouraging our young people to be respectful to one another and have respect for authority figures, work hard in school, earn a degree that will provide a living, etc. This constant self flagellation and telling kids they can have a pass for criminal behavior is going to be very harmful for their futures. I'll add that there's not a country without rulers, kings, tribes, warriors, noblemen, etc without a history of violence and the subjugation of those beneath them. |
The shooter's grandson already is on the news outlets attesting to his grandfather's bigotry and extreme racism. This is a tragedy. |
PP here. I agree it is a tragedy. No question. I'm just thankful the victim survived the shooting and is at home to recover. I'm sure the emotional recovery will be long. |
What about the violence of adults with guns? That also hurts our kids’ futures. Why do they keep getting passes? A kid got shot in the face by a racist old man because he rang the racist old man’s doorbell and you’re ranting about how we’re coddling children and giving them passes on crime and beating ourselves up too much about our racist history. Let’s teach racist people and gun owners about respect and not criming and lay off the youth that want to do better. |

This was me. Today nytimes published this: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/20/us/wrong-house-shootings-guns.html I knew I wasn’t alone in thinking this. |
I don't think I'd just assume that Yarl is some sweet young teen. A teen, yes. But a kid like that coming up to your front door out of the blue, as you look upward from laying on your couch? Yeah that's scary.
I also think this grandson was pretty disloyal, taking advantage of the situation to build his street cred. But both these things are beside the point. Gun control undermines the Republican Party far more than Democrat. Peaceniks by definition don't carry guns, and they vote Democrat. People who love guns vote Republican, and they rocket fuel the party's power. So if you take away the guns you take away the power of the party's most loyal and effective foot soldiers. That ain't right. |
I always remember this kid near Charlotte who got into a car wreck and went to a house to ask for help. The woman called 911 because she was afraid of him and then the police who responded shot and killed him. I was in an accident on a lonely road at night when I was that age, I had to ring a stranger’s doorbell, and no one called the cops on me or murdered me. https://www.cnn.com/2013/09/15/justice/north-carolina-police-shooting/index.html |
What do you mean by that? |
You know what they mean. They mean black. They mean black male. They mean scary black male. Also, let's keep in mind... walking up to someone's front door is not a crime. |
My best friend's mom was murdered in a similar way about 8 years ago.
She volunteered for a service that delivered meals to elderly people. The guy had a gun that his family members didn't know about. She knocked on his door to deliver his daily meals and he shot her through the screen door. He was in his 80s with the beginnings of dementia. The prosecutor brought charges against him but eventually dropped them. |
Could we try to avoid adjectives which suggest which victims are innocent.
No child should be shot to death. |
