OP here. That's what I thought. Either they mixed up UMBC, the child lied to the parent, or someone is trying to create drama. |
It depends on the school (and maybe program, I'm sure the magnet GPAs are high). Over 50% of the student population at Churchill has higher than a 4.5 weighted gpa. I'm guessing whitman has a similar profile. Maybe others. The grade inflation in MCPS is real. Their not doing our kids any favors. |
DP here. Agree. Yes, my kid did not tailor common app essay to schools. She was admitted to 3 T15 and a couple top LACs last year. She did put effort into supplements, though. Maybe that was what PP was referring to? |
Mine got Presidential with admit letter but then was offered additional from the Dept (music in her case) later. |
Sounds like this was a previous year? Website says April 1 notification for Presidential Scholarship. https://www.admissions.umd.edu/finance/freshman-merit-scholarships#:~:text=The%20President's%20Scholarship%20provides%20four,to%20receive%20the%20President's%20Scholarship. |
I've heard of high stats kid who didn't get admitted because they didn't fully complete the application. |
It is at Churchill.. i would think other mcps schools will be similar, may not be 50% but upward of 40%. Check your school profile to make sure. So 4.6 is not categorized as high gpa unfortunatelly. |
It's pretty accurate for the W schools - look at the WJ school profile posted in another thread. |
Same for some of the schools in Howard County, RH, MR and Centennial. My 2020 kid had over a 4.7 and he was not in the top 25% of his class. |
But is has, for years. It's on here a lot. Since she was not going anyway...why did she apply? Any chance that came through in her application? Good luck on the other places. |
Man MCPS is taking GPAs to the next level! Several of the FCPS schools have reached 40%+ over 4.0wGPA but 4.5wGPA is still top of the stack here for now. |
Check for yourself (true with Churchill and WJ's only posted mcps not its own data): Churchill's school profile: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EI5RAHMoBiE9q51Eh_NnwdvczscGFpcu/view WJ's school profile: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/schools/high-schools/r-w/wjhs/uploadedfiles/counseling/wj-profile-2022--2023.pdf |
Not sure if you can compare. MCPS gives same weight honors and AP the same way. My understanding is FCPS has different weights between honors and APs. |
Correct. .5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB, and DE in FCPS. |
I'm hearing that some RMIB students did not get into UMD EA. That's somewhat shocking. I don't know what their stats are, though. Has anyone heard this, too? |
