Republican governor suggests ‘super-majority’ should suffice in state that has required jury unanimity in capital cases since 2017

This is not "terrifying." What is wrong with a super majority?
This is about determining the SENTENCE, not innocence or guilt. And, up until 2017, it was a simple majority.

DP to add, technically the Bible violates this policy, so will Florida remove all copies from schools? Conservatives on this thread, what's your take?

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=0800-0899/0847/Sections/0847.012.html

Activists are already reporting it and requesting that it be banned

https://www.npr.org/2022/04/26/1094740651/florida-man-asks-schools-to-ban-the-bible-following-the-states-efforts-to-remove

The resulting court cases should involve some interesting mental contortions

Good. The hypocrisy is ridiculous.

I'm still waiting to hear a serious comment from a conservative on this forum. I know they're here.

Do you agree or disagree that Florida's law means that the Bible should be banned from schools? If not, why do you make an exception for the Bible (please write out with serious logic not just gaslighting/jokes/changing the topic)?

The Bible includes references to war, human sacrifice, animal sacrifice, murder, rape, torture, genocide, filicide, patricide, and more, with a side serving of sex. Not to mention a hefty amount of magical thinking. It's amazing we allow it anywhere near children.

These area studies courses tend to be about affirmation of certain political views rather than scholarship.

That being said, I also believe in the generalized value of free speech and a market place of ideas, so I am not thrilled with DeSantis banning them, either.

When people accuse you of being racist and you claim not to know why, think back to this sentence about an actual AP course that was created by scholars and historians about AA history and how you, without knowing anything about the course beyond what Fox told you, decided that it was just political and not at all informative or educational, that it wasn’t scholastic.

A lot of the curriculum looks like Progressive doctrine, especially with the random inclusion of LGBTQ topics. You don't need to be a Fox News watcher to see the red flags. A look into African American history should be better balanced. Heck, according to Pew Research, the majority of black adults (59%) and Democrats (62%) don't even support affirmative action.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/04/26/u-s-public-continues-to-view-grades-test-scores-as-top-factors-in-college-admissions/

Feels like African American studies viewed through the lens of Progressives.

This.

It actually looks more like Woke Studies than AA Studies.

Thank you FL for protecting the value and rigor of AA Studies.

That's not a surprise. College Board and AP classes have been going farther and farther left, as have many universities, decade by decade, accelerating. The general public, including college grads, are less and less happy about this, but are powerless to speak up or change anything.

This is the first time anyone has said that a class is too left. Yes, it's inappropriate for DeSantis to do this and yes, his motives are impure. But there are many who want some brakes on the swing left in upper education, by any means necessary.

You should be THANKING DeSantis for putting a brake on the insanity.

If not he, who? I don't see any "liberal" Governor saying this totalitarian racist bs needs to stop.

How so? Please provide an example of teaching in other AP classes from the College Board that strayed too far to the left?

What other books are too far to the left? Maya Angelou?

I don't think Maya Angelou was a core part of the woke AA Studies course... way too conservative for them. They chose to highlight the more "intersectional" queer crowd no one knows or cares about....WHY?

Not talking about the current class, but the comment who said "College Board and AP classes have been going farther and farther to the left."

Where is the evidence of this? What publications/material is opposed in other AP classes?

??

The controversy about the current class tells you everything there's to know.

DeSantis is being called a Nazi...because he opposes a far-left course that reflects political bias not AA history.

Hold onto your butt. Now that you’ve asked for evidence, you’re going to get a lot of EvIdEnCe.

No, it doesn't. It tells me about one class in one State. That's an anecdote, not a trend.

I'm still waiting, but so far they can only claim the one class in one state is evidence of a trend they devoutly believe in, yet still awaiting the evidence....

This thread is about one class.

Prove your credibility and capacity to analyze courses.

How do you assess the syllabus of this course as proposed?

? I'm not the one who made a sweeping assertion about all AP classes, I'm not the one with a point to prove. I'm here waiting for evidence from someone else.
