This must be either a unique experience or troll post. It's been a while for my kuds, but I know lots of current kuds/families. Community seems strong. People seem to forget ESS in the in-bounds draw. Also, as an aside that bears repeating, don't forget that these seats are in addition to the magnet seats allotted. They don't take seats away from Bethesda or Rockville or wherever kids. |
Yep that's what I said. The following fall we could only identify 5 or 6 kids from PBES that were selected that year. The previous year the administration told us that 18 kids had been selected from the 25 in boundary spots. Maybe the lottery was just not kind to PBES. Don't know. |
There is a disgruntled poster who claims to have left the area. Other parents claimed their kid was a bully, but they had a different story.Only read about it here. We've only had positive experiences ourselves. |
It’s huge. Kids move classes every year and leave their friends behind and have to make new ones the following year and there is no parent community associated with the school at all. The links the kids make are apparently in scouts or kids adventures or on their block, not at school - leaving out kids who aren’t part of those activities. Likewise for the parents. But let’s not sidetrack this discussion. The point is there is a 25 place set aside and just because you don’t know 25 kids it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. |
Whoops. Kids not kuds! I can't type on my phone! |
DP 25 seat set in addition, not so much aside |
I am not the poster you are referring to and I’m not a troll. I also read those posts and they weren’t about PBES they were about TPMS (which is a great school and very well run). |
I had around 600 kids in my HS graduating class and knew most of them by the time I graduated. Even at TPES/PBES with 25 different kids in your class each year you get to know most of them after 6 years. |
Jeez. Yes 25 seats that are “aside” or APART from the others. |
True, and they also switch for math and specials so kids interact with more than the kids in their base class each year. |
I said that because some upcounty folk get all up in arms thinking their kid is losing out somehow when people say aside. It's important to say in addition because the magnet only adds 100 seats. These 25 don't add any additional students to the school because they are already in bounds. I just don't want to chum the sharks, you know? Did not mean to be picky! |
Assuming you are with them for six years. The PTA doesn’t even have any efforts to welcome new families - just the basic stuff. |
Got it! Yes they are extra. |
I think that during the pandemic the PTAs were barely staying afloat doing all of the basic service things they needed to do. I also think ANYONE can volunteer: even new parents! As for welcoming efforts, we were new at TPES, and we explicitly asked for a family mentor and for the teacher to help pick some friends for our kid. Both requests were met quickly and the outcomes were more than welcoming (pre-pandemic)...but we asked for them! |
| Anyone have intel on how DCCAPS/AEI will fill slots for selected students who decline the lottery? DD's form says "additional lotteries will be held when vacancies occur" - wondering how this works? |
