Masks optional by spring break

The thing I don't get is if they aren't wearing the masks at lunch - what the heck is the point the rest of the day? They are already exposed... I'm not really suggesting ditching masks but it just seems... inconsistent...

What I don’t understand is why all these people freaking out about covid don’t care about the factors that cause the 98.3 percent of other deaths in children, of which cars are a major factor. How many of you are prepared to get rod of your SUVs and advocate for replacing road lanes with safe bike lanes? Traffic kills ten times as many kids as Covid every year.

But you won’t do anything about that, because it would inconvenience you. You don’t mind inconveniencing kids.

This is the elephant in the room. If you carefully examine the school covid reports, the schools that didn't go outside for lunch or strictly enforced masking in groups seem to be the ones that got clobbered. The schools that did the best were the ones strongly enforcing mask wearing and split up the student body at lunch (outside if possible). If we have another long run of bad weather and kids are eating indoors again, I'd expect another infection spike at school.

The kids, if managed orrectly, could have their masks off for little less than 15 minutes, which would not equal exposure. The could eat outside in better weather. But in any event, we are talking mask free for 30 minute out of a 6 hour day. For 5.5 hours, they get the benefit.

You feel really good when kids are hurt, right? Go on. This is an anonymous board. You can say it.

The point you're trying to make is that 1.7% dead children won't litter the streets with bodies, so it's not a big deal?

You're a scary mommy.

Any pediatric death is a tragedy. But when comparing to the rate of suicide a in the same report, you should really ask a question “ Did I contribute to the suicide in children by demanding that schools close last year? Am I complicit in causing pain to these children? “ The truth is their suicides are on your conscience.

The truth is, you're a bad actor who is paid to come here and babble nonsense about car crashes and suicide. To discredit masks and cause chaos and suffering for more Americans. It's sad you couldn't be man enough to get a real job, dude.

It’s a joke. It’s all for show. The kids take off their masks to eat breakfast in the classroom in ES. At our middle school, they do an after school snack and the kids eat together.

My kids don’t go outside for lunch (or breakfast). Our ES has stayed open this entire time. Your hypothesis (based on what?) is invalid.

Or they’re in intense denial and the mask is a sign of the pandemic they want to just go away. Masks reduce risk of transmission - every reputable public health agency in the world supports mask wearing. It’s not about protecting yourself, it’s about protecting others. Why this is even in debate is bizarre. But here we are.

Not for kids they don't. Europe will be dropping masks well before MCPS. And
elementary schools didn't ever have students wear masks
in many places.

There are very few places in the world that required kids age 2-6 to wear masks. It is atrocious that, in such a highly-educated county, we have 5 year olds masked. MoCo is crazy with masks required for anyone above the age of 2.

Mask optional by Spring Break.

Yes, there are forces out there, who want to convince suburban housewives, to stop making their kids. They are pouring million of dollars into this, concentrating primarily on Montgomery County, MD. They have WHO, and multiple health experts in their pockets. Damn you, evil forces!

That’s not normal.

You cite mask policy in other countries for 2-6 year olds and argue that should mean no masks for a system that is K-12? That is illogical. European countries have consistently implemented mask mandates - certainly for adults in schools and children over age 11. Many systems mandate masks down to age 6, particularly with the advent of Omicron. In Spain kids 6 and older have been masking at school since Fall 2020, and it’s really not an issue.

While it may be true that France does not make those under 6 wear masks - analogizing that to MCPS would equate to excusing K only from masks.

Great! Glad you agree. Let’s start there. Masks optional for all kids 6 and under in Montgomery County. That would be a HUGE improvement from what we have now.

What is not normal? Breakfast in the classrooms? It is now.

MCPS started to provide free breakfast and lunch for all kids. They are usually eating in the classroom.

And our MS does free snacks for the kids who stay for an after school club.
