Mohawks on little boys-why?

Anonymous
I can understand teenagers, on the right teen, it can be a very cool look. But for kindergarteners? Why? Because mommy wants Johnny to be a bad-ass?

It just looks stupid, silly, trashy, red necky (not as much as the mullet/rat tail combo on a 7 year old, of course).

Let's hear why, moms of mohawk boys.

Why? Because DS told the stylist he wanted one. He did it once, thought it was fun, and was done with it. That was when he was 4.

And because you can't get away with it as an adult.

--signed, a mom who had a purple one for years. Being an adult sucks.

It's for poors and the middleish income people with down market sensibilities.

Mohawk's sister will invariably have her ears pierced too young, too.

My son gets one for about a month in the beginning of the summer for lacrosse tournaments. He is 12 and has been doing it for past 2 summers. I hate it, agree it looks trashy BUT hair is a very easy thing to let a kid experiment with as it can be cut again and grows out fairly quickly. Honestly I think allowing them choices regarding personal apperance when its okay (like in summer) when key are young will wad off possible teenage rebellion when they are older.

Actually, it's not just for the poors any more! It's becoming popular in some local soccer circles at high SES schools.

Agreed that it is a safe way for a kid to try out a little edge now and then. Twelve is old enough to have your own ideas about hair. The little boy thing is strange. Most kindergarten boys I know really don't care about their hair yet.

Holy over-thinking things batman. Its hair. They are kids.

The troll who constantly chirps 'poors' is so sad.

Actually, read the subject line last two PPs. Notice the word "little." Not "high SES hs and ms boys who walk by themselves to get a haircut and tell the stylist what to do."

I'm am not a troll. I used the word poors once in the past year on dcum. I save it for special occasions, and trashy fake punk 1970s hair on a 4 yr old is something poor people do.

My 8 year old DS loves his faux-hawk. He only gels it up on some days. It depends on his mood and how early he gets up in the morning. I could care less if anyone thinks we are trashy. This area could use a little more spunk. It's so boring around here.

My son had one when he was second grade. He looked awesomely trashy and low-class. I loved it.

It's a fucking mohawk, you idiots. It doesn't need or want your approval. As a matter of fact, your reaction is exactly what the mohawk is about (in terms of the punk rock movement anyway.)

Um, yeah, in regard to the poors thing, 12 year old boys definitely don't even know or care what that means. I am way too comfortable in who I am to even worry about such a shallow and tacky assessment. Call me whatever you when my son has his mohawk. I care much more about making sure he is happy and feels able to express himself than I do about the opinion of some random, insecure poser. AND, just to be clear, my son attends a top private, is a great student, great lacrosse player, good and decent person, kind and thoughtful, and usually dresses about as preppy as it gets. He is also darn cute. A summer Mohawk at 12 years old (or 10, 11, or whatever age) does nothing to lessen who he is and if you judge him poorly for it (pun intended) then you are the fool.

Wow, private school mom, feel better now?

My brother always wore a mohawk because his wrestling head gear fits better with a tight hair cut and with the mohawk he wasn't bald

+1. Come on. It's beyond cavil that Mohawk or any fashion like hair-styles on a little boy exhibits white trash sensibility. Not subject to debate really.

Next thing you know bass boats and four wheel ATVs will start popping up on ccmd front lawns. Budweiser bottles next to the recycling can.
