I heard a marketing position in law firm pays well. Should I put on a suit and start sending out resumes?
I of course have no law firm marketing experience, but marketing is marketing is marketing. Anyone know what your firm pays? |

Marketing is not marketing. Knowing your industry is crucial. You sound like you are fairly junior- yes?
What kind of marketing do you do now? |
No, not really. I have worked in several industries....That is the only thing you have to know the industry, but learning the industry isn't rocket science. This is where I differ from most people. Most people say you have to know the industry...you don't. You just have to be a good marketer and take a very short time to learn the industry. But it is fairly easy to see how industries market whether they are B2B or B2C. Now...some people are not smart enough to pick up on industry trends (consultants), but I am smart and could figure it out in a day or two. That is my skill. I just feel people are so stuck on that...you have to know the industry. You can know the industry, but geography can play a part...if you work for DC and are applying for the same sort of position in California...so no matter what there is some learning in any new position. |
| Well, you seem to know everything. Best of luck to you. |
| OP - Get over yourself. |
Not really...I just don't know why people are so fearful of people switching industries...especially in sales and marketing. I mean in all honesty...I feel I can do anything...mostly because of my solid work ethic and talent for being able to learn things quickly. I just feel like I should be doing something bigger than what I am. I feel so small and insignificant. I can't really change my overall field, but I am certain I would be more valuble to someone else, something more meaningful or at least something more on a larger scale. I came into my job doing one thing, now I am the head of a department I knew nothing about...Not only am I rocking it in that department it is all about this one specific thing...which now I have literally become an expert in. I have the degree without the degree...sorry I can't be too specific. |
I am good at what I do...always room for improvement...always learning new things...never satisfied with just the basics. I am not high on myself, but I am confident. |
Great. Sounds like you don't need advice from anyone here, then. PS- I work in marketing for a law firm/consultancy - make $240K. |
Did they require that you have a law background? Did you start in a lower level position and work your way up? Advice...The people on here are not giving advice. I feel you can learn an industry...you don't think you could have friend who said...hey Bob I own a sneaker manufacturing company mostly doing private label shoes and want to potentially break into creating my own brand...and you couldn't come up with industry standards? Pricing, competition, cost of entry, barriers to entry, etc? Maybe even say...you know what is missing in the market...sandals that are made from grass....whatever. If you are marketer...you are a marketer. If you are good...you are good. |
| OP just because you think you will learn the industry quickly doen't mean anyone will hire you. Have you ever been in marketing for a professional services firm? |
| I bet your obnoxious know-it-all attitude is why you are stuck doing such a small and unimportant work. To know the industry in law, you have to know the product and all the industries to which it may be sold. Nobody knows this completely, even the most seasoned lawyer. It is great that you should be able to learn it in a day or two. Kudos! |
| Based on your written communication skills I wouldn't hold your breath on getting hired by a law firm, OP. |
Test me. Let's have some fun. Since you seem to know all about it yourself I didn't say I would know everything...but who does? What I did say is I can learn everything, in a short amount of time. That is my special skill in life...patterns. Marketing suits me best because I can look at data and recognize patterns. then my creative side can implement strategies to improve patterns. hey look...this is what I do. I hope if I were hiring a divorce attorney they would say to me...this is what I do, and I am good at it. What...I am going to hire someone who isn't good.
|
Yes. Insurance. |
|
i think people typically look for experience in the industry not because someone else cannot learn the industry, but because it is just easier to hire someone that they know has done that type of work before. or someone who knows what they are getting into and the expectations/culture (which yes differs from company to company within an industry, but in general the structure of the position and authority should be similar).
anyway OP i know you were looking for advice but it looks like you have pissed off the lawyers and consultants so you probably will not get much of it anymore
