They both handled the bike dispute poorly, but only one of them filmed it and released it in the internet. Soooo … one of them was way worse.

You forgot that she was yelling "HELP ME HELP ME" as if she was in danger when it turns out she put herself in that position. Yea, the kid was being a dick by hoarding the bike and I would have been annoyed with him too, but she could have handled the interaction gracefully. They are both in the wrong.

We just don't know. She may have felt she was in danger--she says the bike was unattended before 4-5 guys came up and forcibly redocked her. I would have felt threatened. It's a he said/she said situation though.

Your "handle it gracefully" apparently entails quietly going away and pedaling home on a regular bike. If it involves a white woman, that is. I disagree.

At the end of the day, though, THEY filmed it and THEY posted it online with their racialized comments in the background. This could have remained a small skirmish, no harm no foul. But THEY made sure that didn't happen.

And they claim she asked them if she could have it, they said no, and she shoved past them to scan the code. So she's lying.

If you believe teens over an adult in pretty much any situation, you are an incredible mark and I feel sorry for you.

NP. Lol. Sex abuse victims would like a word.

And yet eric garner died selling single cigarettes. "These people" ? You're disgusting. Police can and do overreact (yes, even in NYC) ALL THE TIME. They wouldn't be reacting to the BIKE, they'd be reacting to the "poor delicate overworked white lady" who "rightfully got" the bike. Please.

Are you actually mocking a visibly pregnant woman who's just come off a 12-hour shift as a "poor delicate overworked white lady"? You can't have children of your own.

And how, exactly, is her "whiteness" relevant? You added that to racialize it. You're gross.

NO I was mocking the PP who called her overworked.

But OF COURSE IT'S RACIALIZED. Me mentioning her race didn't make it so. It EXISTS. White women cry and get black men killed.

And there it is. ANY white woman who cries in public--even after coming off a 12-hour shift while pregnant just to be mocked by a gang of guys hoarding the last e-bike--must be trying to get black men killed. There was no acceptable response for her, only to quietly back down and either take one of the non-electric bikes or walk home.

Do you know what I think you are?

It was not a "gang of guys" --- nice dog whistle, by the way. It was a couple of KIDS. And YES - of course the acceptable adult response would be to take a non electric bike. Why is it the children who are supposed to be more mature than the adult? Because you all baby white woman and vilify black children, calling them a gang.

TF. Are you listening to yourself? He's 17 about to graduate from high school, so he's almost 18. Not a "child" by anyone's definition. He's been scamming Citibike all day, including hoarding this bike for 50 minutes at the same station without actually using it himself and abusing the Angel Bikes program. He and his friends loudly mock the PA and called her baby r****d. He and his friends filmed her and put the video online.

And you think he's a poor widdle child with zero agency. And that the pregnant woman should take the regular bike--have you ever been pregnant?

White boys who are 17 are ROUTINELY called boys while black kids are held to a different standard. And while they may have been behaving immaturely, that doesn't make it ok for an adult to cry and call the cops because they were mean to her.

And yes, I have been a tired pregnant white woman three times but it never occurred to me to cry and call the police on children who were acting dumb. But then, I am not a racist.

She didn't call the cops!!! Where are you getting this? Hasn't this been explained to death?

omg so sue me I didn't read the whole 200 page thread. BUT she absolutely did not be needing to cry "HELP ME" as if they were going to hurt her. She could have just ... LEFT. Them being dicks doesn't mean she was somehow kidnapped.

We don’t know her mindset at the time - I’m honestly wondering if she was thinking she was about to be the victim of a theft or rental scam. If someone came out of nowhere at me and started yelling about that’s my bike I would think they were trying to steal it off me and ride it when it was on my account and leave me on the hook for the damages.

Why do white women get the benefit of the doubt and black kids don't?

Well in this case, it’s because the black kid has admitted what he did, and there’s video of it, and he is the one who chose to film it and put it online. And also because the claim that she was faking her emotion in order to get them killed is outlandish.

As far as the benefit of the doubt goes, I can believe they are essentially good kids who just enjoyed biking (which is great - I am a big bike advocate) who were being a little selfish and tricky (normal behavior). The only reason we we are even here parsing this to death is because THEY drastically raised the stakes by posting it online, and the race grifters created an internet mob againsy the PA.

She had to get home. Why didn't these young men leave? They were clearly abusing the bike share system. I hope their memberships have been terminated.

I wonder if CitiBike is having conversations about this whole thing. The truth is the boys are using the system in a way that is bad for CitiBike -- bike hoarding is bad for the system and discourages people from relying on bikeshare because it makes it less reliable. Plus the idea that people are camping on docked bikes and then bullying people out of renting them -- that's literally just money out of CitiBike's pocket, money that could go into stuff like rebalancing bikes and buying more e-bikes, which no doubt they want to do.

Basically, no way CitiBike can come out and endorse what the boys were doing -- it runs counter to their whole model and I'm certain CitiBike views their behavior as a problem.

But if they come out and condemn the boys or even just say, more neutrally, that users are not supposed to hoard bikes and that if a bike is docked, it is available for use to whoever is ready to rent it next, they will be called racist and boycotted.

It's a no-win for them.

I'm sure they're discussing it--it's negative publicity.

Best thing they could do is quietly change the rules. Like, you can't re-rent the same bike within something like 3 hours after docking it. And if the records show you were traveling with others, you can't rent their bikes out either. Although thinking about it, that would be inconvenient for people who are just stopping to drop something off or pick up a food order.

My lawyer gut check is they won’t do anything that could get them any more embedded in the litigation than they already are. If they change the policies, Marino will surely try to get a witness to say why, and it will immediately be construed as racist reasons.

These are young men who are graduating high school right now. They are old enough to be held accountable for their behavior, just like anyone else. She was surrounded by multiple men blocking her from leaving. What would YOU do if you were in that situation? She did not know if they were harmless or not (on the video they appeared to be but from her viewpoint at that moment she felt threatened). Help me is the appropriate response to it. She should just do what?

You even bother to ask? PP was responding to me asking the exact same question. Her response was "they are just children and she should take the regular bike." Gross.

- a progressive

They aren't children if they graduated high school. You cannot say they are kids for one situation and men for another.

Either way, they should come out and apologize for their actions, she should apologize for hers and be done with it. This has nothing to do with race. The men behaved very poorly and should know better than to gang up on a pregnant woman but if they said they were using it, even though they were in the wrong, you don't just take the bike either.

I see so many referring to them as men. Just a few weeks ago the headlines about the rock throwing incident referred to the people who murdered someone as teens.
(3 Colorado Teens Charged With Murder in Fatal Rock-Throwing Incident) I was shocked to see they were 18. Meanwhile, these teen boys are men.

I’m sure they are well aware of cases of bike-camping and people taking serial rides to stay under the cap. It’s probably not a big enough issue to be worth changing the policy.

Why do white women get the benefit of the doubt and black kids don't?

I am one of the MANY people who first saw this video with a caption like "white woman steals bike and then weaponizes tears against black kids" and didn't give her any benefit of the doubt. At all. My first response to the video was "what a B" and "oh great, another one."

It was only after I saw that there was some controversy over it, and went and rewatched the video, that I realized I'd jumped to conclusions based on how the video was presented to me.

A lot of people did the exact same thing. Most people probably never looked back into it, either. The woman is on leave from her job and cannot presently return to her apartment. What "benefit of the doubt" has she received?

Also, hi, she actually extended benefit of the doubt to the teens because when her lawyer came out to defend her, he focused their arguments on the people who doxed her and defamed her online. When asked if they intended to track those teens down and press charges or sue them, he said no, and he emphasized the boys were very young and that they had no interest in going after them.

She offered them the benefit of the doubt and simply wanted the people calling her a white supremacist online to stop. But then the boy came out of hiding and his mom started calling this woman entitled and racist. WTF? She'd made a good faith effort to de-escalate with regards to the boys and then they come out swinging for her.

She deserves the benefit of the doubt and didn't get it. They got the benefit of the doubt and then wasted it.

Agree. And because a pp has aptly demonstrated what's maintained more widely, that there's simply no way for a white woman to defend herself against physical aggression and she should just quietly efface herself.

Why do white women get the benefit of the doubt and black kids don't?

Huh? She was the first to be doxxed and her reputation ruined. The black kids (can I use that? you did) were the ones who filmed it and posted it online, and Monique, Crum and others were the ones who made it go viral with highly racialized language. Thanks to Monique and the others, the hospital put the PA on administrative leave and she had to leave her house because of death threats.

It was only when she released her receipt, and then the black kids released their receipts that confirmed her timeline and also opened a window into their hoarding behavior, that people started criticizing them.

And the black kids still have incurred just a tiny share of the repetitional damage she's still dealing with.

Your bias is showing.

The only people making it about race are the ones who are racist themselves. This had nothing to do with race and either party could be any race and this dispute would have happened.

These aren't kids. They are 17-18-year-old young men graduating high school right now.

The bike company needs to fix their system and now allow rentals but the easy way to get around that would be for the men to trade around bikes.

They were just out for a joyride and that's ok but at the time they did not have the bike rented.

Nobody knew how old they were until the interview came out yesterday. When this video first came out it was unclear if they were minors or not. To me it seemed like immature behavior so I guessed from 17-20 but wouldn’t have been surprised at 22-23. So I called them “boys”
to give them the benefit of the doubt - but then was told thay was racist - and now am told “men” is also racist. 🤷‍♀️

I would feel threatened if someone shoved my bike into the dock and yelled lies at me about it being their bike.

So would I but now we have more information and this isn't what happened.

It is 100% what happened and the boy has even confirmed it. They forcibly redocked the bike after she rented it. There is debate about whether she asked to use the bike and he declined (and whether he should be allowed to decline), or whether she got on an unattended bike.

But yes, they redocked the bike with her on it and then we have video evidence of them yelling at her, saying it was "his bike" (this is vague AT BEST, and I personally don't think he can claim that -- he'd docked the bike 7 minutes prior at that point, it didn't belong to him in any way, shape, or form), claiming she was fake crying, harassing her about her baby, etc.

Even if you think she elbowed past him to get on the bike, it doesn't change any of the facts we know: the bike was docked and available according the the app at the time, she rented the bike and they forced her back into the dock, they surrounded her and harassed her until she left. Those are facts, not subject to debate and we have hard evidence for them.

Looking at the video, there is one man who is a jerk and spewing nasty comments but the other men seemed harmless and just wanted the bike. However, you have to look at the moment in time where she had a man holding the bike she was on preventing her from moving or initially getting off the bike. What would you do in that situation? You would probably call for help, cry, freak out, panic, or maybe you are one of the few who could stay calm and try to talk it out. However, she just got off a 12 hour shift as a PA and 6 months pregnant. Once could assume she was pretty tired and just wanted to get home. The bikes are cheaper/quicker depending on where you are going which is why they are popular.

The teens confirmed this is what happened. Grifters like Monique say things like "the bike was redocked" but the teens said they moved the bike back into the dock with her sitting on it.
