Pro-reform poster here. This is a really smart and solid take. The difficulty is that you can't really introduce any kind of exam without inviting a huge influence of exam prep - UNLESS you use the exam purely as a measure of competency and then throw away the scores such that a passing score qualifies you for selection but a perfect score is no better than a passing score. And of course, exam prep points to motivation on the part of the parents as well as financial resources, neither of which is a reflection on the students themselves. |
The TJ application requires that MS Math and Science are honors classes and that students take at least one other honors class. Plus they have to have Algebra 1. And 3.5 GPA. So every kid in the top 1.5% that is considered has had a minimum of six honors classes by 8th grade. I would guess that most of the kids in that top 1.5% have more then 6 honors classes. I would guess that most of those in the 1.5% are taking AAP classes, which means LA, Math, Science, and Social Studies are honors classes.
Do you even hear yourself? The standard is not easy to attain. It really isn't. Parents of kids thinking about TJ seem to have a very skewed idea of how difficult it is to hit those standards. Most kids will not even come close to hitting those standards. But every TJ applicant has to. So yeah, they kids at TJ this year all took honors classes and at least Algebra 1. I believe the report that was put out regarding the Freshman class showed that most of the kids had Algebra 1 and Geometry. |
Solid points but mine is better ![]() |
Solid point but you just lack creativity. You can't introduce ANY kind of exam? Really? Despite the veneer of civility, your bias is clear. Take care. |
Just tell your kids not to give in to this general nonsense and keep working hard, smart. There's enough and more opportunity if you are willing to be positive. Growth mentality vs scarcity/woe be me mentality. |
Why wouldn’t they do the top 1.5% at the school you are attending? SOL scores for kids are attached to the school that they are attending. If you choose to move schools, you choose that as your school. That counts for everything.
You don’t have to choose to attend an AAP Center school. Parents knew this year that school choice mattered. Parents know for next year that the school matters. If you feel that the academic rigor is better at the AAP Center, then send your kid there. Appreciate that they are getting what you deem to be a better education. They probably have access to better extra curricular activities as well. If TJ is that important to you and you think you stand a better chance of getting into TJ coming from your base school, stay at the base school. You have a choice, make your choice and accept that there are consequences for that choice. |
^That really stinks for the gen Ed kids zoned to an AAP center. They have to compete against a bunch of AAP kids who transferred in. |
Or AAP kids who don’t have a choice but to attend that Center because it is their base school. They don’t have a choice to move to a different school. Maybe they will get rid of the Centers as soon as there is LLIV AAP across the County. |
OK then, get over it. |
We’ll get over it when we screw you liberals to hell. Let’s see. |
I mean, good grief... nearly half of the spaces in each incoming TJ class are unallocated, meaning that those spaces are up for grabs to the highest-evaluated applicants once you get away from the top 1.5% at each school. So you're not even competing with the best of the best for those unallocated seats. And that's even assuming that all of the allocated seats get used, which they don't. |
The more I read parents on this thread, the more convinced I am that their kids are really not THAT much different from the kids that they're trying to keep out of TJ by crying "racism". TJ's been in session for a semester now with the Class of 2025. Where are the reports of huge numbers of students unable to cope? Where are the reports of the mass exodus of students who don't belong there? Where are the teachers talking about how they have to lower their standards to account for the lack of an exam in the admissions process? Where are the teachers talking about behavior issues that would have been eliminated with teacher recommendations? Nothingburger. |
1. They are not trying to keep out other kids. Just the opposite. 2. Rome wasn't built in a day or destroyed in a day. 3. I hope you make your living as a story writer and not in a job needing data and logic. Enjoy your burger. |
All bow to the Oracle. The Oracle has spoken. The more She reads the parents on the thread the more she is convinced that kids are no different. Of course parents dont know anything. She knows. And her opinion should prevail. McA bit the dust with the same attitude. |
Person in charge of TJ (Principal) will not allow anything negative to get out regarding class of 2025. She was a rabid supporter of the changes and hostile to Asian students. |
