If it apologises then parents like me definitely would steer clear as bowing to public pressure on an issue like this from a bunch of people who aren’t even part of the school community would suggest a lack of integrity. If they don’t apologise then there’s this other bunch of people who kick up a fuss. I suggest they just listen to their own community.

Then the school should have thought this through before having the head of school dress as a pharoh for a spring event where it could be construed as an anti-semetic action.

Only a very stupid person would think this was anti-Semitic.

I cannot be convinced that there is not a ton of trolling on this thread.

I’m trying to understand. Where do you see trolling?

Is asking for accountability the same thing as trolling?

The board made him do it.

I am a little offended by the people who think there was only one pharaoh who enslaved Jews.

this. as a POC i think the outrage/offense taken is a bit racist/Eurocentric.
Because one Pharaoh did something (very) bad, we can't celebrate the achievements of any of them, or one of the most important early cultures (as a pharaoh is a symbol of early Egyptian culture overall)? So a bad act (i know it lasted a long time) against a group of people who are now mostly considered "white" or "western" outweighs thousands of years of achievement of one of the most important/lauded civilizations in the world, that happens to have been a non-western one, and is rather important to many African-Americans?

Absolutely. Pharaohs are POC and this is stereotyping all Pharaohs, which is wrong.

Is this really 21 pages of white people demanding that a black man publicly justify wearing a costume from the continent of Africa?

Yes. Otherwise they would be continuing the discussion about the "big 3" plus the school their kid got into while the rest are sub-par. (There is useful information around here and there is also ample evidence of just how miserable some people are).

Point well taken--and it helps me look at it a little differently, as the absurdist endpoint in identity politics. Where EVERYONE has a different reason to be offended over the exact same thing. I'm loving it.

This is a really racist comment. If it was about a POC you would be the first to scream racism, but because it is an issue with Jews, who you are saying are white and privileged the bad things that happened aren't really reverent. So, slavery is relevant. However, things like this and the holocaust are not?

Nope. Wearing a nondescript Egyptian pharaoh costume is not in the slightest racist, relevant or even off setting. I don't see it any differently than donning a toga.

um, is this response a joke/troll? if not, i think you mean anti-semitic? And no I wouldn't, because it's just trivial, and there are much bigger problems to deal with. I never said privileged. or mentioned slavery, or the holocaust. and i certainly didn't compare them or prioritize one over the other. You're putting a lot into my statements to create a straw man for you to make some point that isn't relevant to anything anyone is saying.

Assuming all posters on this thread are white is as presumptuous as others on this thread saying all Jews are white. It’s 2021 people...

The board made him put on a pharaoh outfit for a super hero video? Are they trolling him?

I’m a POC and offended much more by the civil war photo shoot than the pharaoh, and offended 1000x more than that because accountability doesn’t seem to be a value the school believes in or practices.

Jew here. Maybe I am an outlier, but I am not at all bothered by this. I didn’t read through the entire thread, but I do believe our society is becoming hyper sensitive and we are now just policing each other. Instead of whining about it here, send an email to the school voicing your concern and actually DO something about it. For what it’s worth, my husband is brown and feels the same way.
