Family Beach House- DS and Friends Using it for Summer.

OP here.

So many angry people. Maybe you wouldn't be so angry if you had a beach house?

Anyway, update.

First kids mom has come grovelling back asking over the course of three emails if her kid could please join the beach house. She apologized profusely and claimed she'd been emotional when she sent the email. Answer was "Too bad, so sad"

Three other boys have since come forward asking if they could rent the other bunks in the bunk house and they got into a bidding war- offering $2000 each. DH and BILs said no because of the septic system. I thought they were foolish because for 7k you could almost replace the system which is nearing its end of life anyway.

So- here's the takeaway if you're a mom. Keep your gossipy mouth shut and play nice. Because it will cost your kid socially big time.

Sounds like you need to replace the septic system. How will a few boys ruin it given the real issue is replacement. Why be nasty to the mom? Who knows what their financial situation is.

Also calling $333/month for a glorified shed with no running water or kitchen "nominal rent" is hilarious. That's highway robbery.

Three college boys are going to live in a property owned by their own family, that's not "free" that's housing provided for by the family.

I absolutely believe it. Growing up my best friend's parents had a house on St. Simons. During college and law school her parents let her use it for the summer. Competition was FIERCE to get a spot. You have any idea who you rub elbows with in the summer down there? Judges, Senators, Congressmen, etc. These are people that can set you up for life.

Acreage that can get you “set up for life” my God it just gets better and better

Oh, you deny white privilege? You think a poor black girl from SE Memphis has the same chances at success as a rich white girl form Buckhead? Cute. You must be rich and white to think that way anyway.

Wow. Okay. I’m sorry I was disrespectful. This is one of DCUM’s better trolls.

I cant decide if this fake update made it better or ruined it for me

Same here. It wasn't even believable, just pathetic.

NP I assume your kid has running water and a toilet, right?

OP's kid and the other kid both have equal access to water and toilets. Did you miss that part or is your reading comprehension so poor that you didn't understand it?

You actually don't understand equality. Shed kid has to leave the building and walk outside to use the bathroom. That's not equal. What if the inside kids accidentally locked him out?

Well, I'm sure he'd die.

FWIW I think I might believe the original scenario. OP either got carried away or wasn't prepared for her lashing and made an outlandish update

We don't know the mom's money situation so lets give her son a beach house for the summer!

I lol'd

Lashing? I'd say it was about 50/50. Maybe 60/40 in favor of charging rent

My takeaway as a mom is that you need to have a discussion with your children about the details involved with inviting friends to your beach house. All of this nonsense could have been avoided if your son had been equipped from the beginning to tell his friend a rental fee would be expected if he stayed for the summer. At the very least, a “let me check with my parents and confirm”. Is he even aware he should have done that?

Why is a college age young man inviting guests/renters and leaving Moms to duke out the details?

Bottom line: You didn’t prepare your son for expectations regarding beach house invitations.

Fake. Fun, but fake.

We used to have a group beach house in The Dewey area. We had to have a rule no camping in the yard. Big yard. Water view. People thought that was a nice way to be at the beach cheaply.
So I’m not surprised that there was a bidding war at $11/nt for the whole summer with use of house. I feel bad for the kid because his mother screwed up a good thing. Too much name calling and drama. As the manager of our house it would be a no with this person.

There are many circumstances of a room with shared bathroom and kitchen for students. It’s the price you pay for short term rentals in beach communities for very cheap.

How many instances of someone trying to make you rent the shed with no running water?

Actually we did. It was a tobacco curing shed on top of a mountain. You had to walk to the main house. It was nice because of the view and sheltered from bugs with AC. It was fun
When I took over temporarily as the booking person the owner told me “ it’s a certain kind of person that wants to walk up a mountain and stay there ... so be sure and tell them it’s a steep climb. Not suitable for non hikers ...” that shed was ALWAYS rented. It was a fun place to stay and so beautiful.

To all of you naysarers claiming no one would rent a place without water, I'd direct your attention to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club or the PATC. It's a club I have been a member of for meany years and it owns and operates approximately 45 cabins for rent in the mid Atlantic.

The vast majority of them have not only no water, but no electricity as well.

And this weekend, in the dead of winter, there are zero vacancies. Not a single cabin is available.

They are routinely booked fully two months out.

So I ask you- if a cabin with no heat and no water and no electricity is fully booked on a 22F degree weekend, why in God's name would an air conditioned, lighted bunk house at the beach (and adjacent to a bathroom and kitchen) go unfilled?

It's frankly, laughable. I bet there are literally dozens of kids who would jump at the chance to stay there.

The PATC cabins are rented out by people who sought out that specific experience. The friend in question wasn’t in the market for a beach rental until OP’s son pitched the idea of living together at the beach. Also, most of the people renting cabins from PATC probably have a higher income than that of a college student doing seasonal work over the summer and, most importantly, this friend wasn’t going to the beach for a weekend/week long getaway, like people renting PATC cabins. He was asked to live there for 3 MONTHS. The PATC doesn’t invite people for the whole simmer in order to keep them company. Finally, this family’s beach house has never been an income-generating rental unit this kid was invited to live in the glorified shed.

Way too many assumptions. And I'm not here to qualify my feelings. The fact is, most if not all 20 year old boys would jump at the chance to stay in the bunkhouse for the summer for $1000. If you don't believe that, that's fine.
