Sounds like you need to replace the septic system. How will a few boys ruin it given the real issue is replacement. Why be nasty to the mom? Who knows what their financial situation is. |
Three college boys are going to live in a property owned by their own family, that's not "free" that's housing provided for by the family. |
Same here. It wasn't even believable, just pathetic. |
Well, I'm sure he'd die. |
FWIW I think I might believe the original scenario. OP either got carried away or wasn't prepared for her lashing and made an outlandish update |
We don't know the mom's money situation so lets give her son a beach house for the summer! I lol'd |
Lashing? I'd say it was about 50/50. Maybe 60/40 in favor of charging rent |

My takeaway as a mom is that you need to have a discussion with your children about the details involved with inviting friends to your beach house. All of this nonsense could have been avoided if your son had been equipped from the beginning to tell his friend a rental fee would be expected if he stayed for the summer. At the very least, a “let me check with my parents and confirm”. Is he even aware he should have done that?
Why is a college age young man inviting guests/renters and leaving Moms to duke out the details? Bottom line: You didn’t prepare your son for expectations regarding beach house invitations. |
| Fake. Fun, but fake. |

We used to have a group beach house in The Dewey area. We had to have a rule no camping in the yard. Big yard. Water view. People thought that was a nice way to be at the beach cheaply.
So I’m not surprised that there was a bidding war at $11/nt for the whole summer with use of house. I feel bad for the kid because his mother screwed up a good thing. Too much name calling and drama. As the manager of our house it would be a no with this person. |
Actually we did. It was a tobacco curing shed on top of a mountain. You had to walk to the main house. It was nice because of the view and sheltered from bugs with AC. It was fun When I took over temporarily as the booking person the owner told me “ it’s a certain kind of person that wants to walk up a mountain and stay there ... so be sure and tell them it’s a steep climb. Not suitable for non hikers ...” that shed was ALWAYS rented. It was a fun place to stay and so beautiful. |

To all of you naysarers claiming no one would rent a place without water, I'd direct your attention to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club or the PATC. It's a club I have been a member of for meany years and it owns and operates approximately 45 cabins for rent in the mid Atlantic.
The vast majority of them have not only no water, but no electricity as well. And this weekend, in the dead of winter, there are zero vacancies. Not a single cabin is available. They are routinely booked fully two months out. So I ask you- if a cabin with no heat and no water and no electricity is fully booked on a 22F degree weekend, why in God's name would an air conditioned, lighted bunk house at the beach (and adjacent to a bathroom and kitchen) go unfilled? It's frankly, laughable. I bet there are literally dozens of kids who would jump at the chance to stay there. |
The PATC cabins are rented out by people who sought out that specific experience. The friend in question wasn’t in the market for a beach rental until OP’s son pitched the idea of living together at the beach. Also, most of the people renting cabins from PATC probably have a higher income than that of a college student doing seasonal work over the summer and, most importantly, this friend wasn’t going to the beach for a weekend/week long getaway, like people renting PATC cabins. He was asked to live there for 3 MONTHS. The PATC doesn’t invite people for the whole simmer in order to keep them company. Finally, this family’s beach house has never been an income-generating rental unit this kid was invited to live in the glorified shed. |
Excellent post. I fixed one thing for you. |
Way too many assumptions. And I'm not here to qualify my feelings. The fact is, most if not all 20 year old boys would jump at the chance to stay in the bunkhouse for the summer for $1000. If you don't believe that, that's fine. |
