We cant even agree on common facts anymore, like climate change. Or the impact of fracking. Or that Russia is an enemy we should play footies with. white Americans like Putin, an enemy to America and democracy, more than Pres Obama. Ignorance of my fellow white Americans is what concerns me the most. We will eventually need to cash these checks. I'm hopeful that those in charge will be more empathetic than how we have acted.

It remains to be seen how much damage the current administration will do, but I think the stigmatization of the president's supporters is likely going to be the worst and longest lasting harm to this country.

Being black (but privileged, believe me) I'm like another poster up thread who talked about seeing the crack epidemic and opioid epidemic up close. I've experienced neither, but I also work in public health policy and it's hard not to miss how all the stigma of being a minority in this country is now shifting to lower income whites who are increasingly uneducated, unhealthy and resentful about all of the above. Easier to notice if you know it and recognize it.

Not easy to see if you're busy trying to keep stigma in its place with decades old bullshit about the ills of being black, hispanic, etc. Stigma is definitely helping the opioid epidemic thrive.

Racism is limiting no matter what policies are applied to mitigate its effects. Broader society considers it a wasted effort because they believe black/hispanic/whatever people are inherently stupid and criminal.

Now that attitude is turned on poor white people. It's always been there, but the number of poor white people has been growing exponentially and speeding up with the opioid epidemic. It's overwhelming people and places that were overwhelmed to begin with.

Almost all of these places went for Trump, who doesn't show any inclination to help. He doesn't like poor people, either.

2) Similar to above, most whites in this country cannot trace their lineage back 350 years. The "Mass Immigration" between 1882 and 1924 were poor, uneducated, persecuted minorities.

I strongly believe in individual responsibility. But I also understand and empathize with the complexities associated with AA history in this country. I have taken the time to TRY to understand things from their POV and not just accept what my parents told me, or incomplete white washed pro-American history books. I am also aware of white america's history of pitting other minorities achievement against AAs, which again is a gross equivalency in all aspects. It ignores US immigration policy and the structural barriers faced by AAs not faced by others. The existence of wealthy or highly educated AAs doesn't dispute or diminish its impact. Neither does pointing to the success of African and Caribbean immigrants. We will never move forward until white Americans and the USG can acknowledge basic truths about how AAs have been, and still are treated. 1) "public enemies". During the time of stalin's repression about 10 million of children were declared "children of the public enemies". While their parents vanished in concentration camps, these children were placed in the orphanages where they were ostracized. When they grew up they were deprived of college education. Guess what, about 90% of them did not become a career criminals, or alcoholics, or anything of that nature. Against all odds they became decent people with white/blue color professions and their children are even better off then their parents.
2) Russia had slavery for centuries. Slave's descenders made on their own, without any gov programs to help them. Of course, the concept of slavery was not groomed and promoted, there were no retributions - you swim or you sink, you choice. People chose to swim.
3) Russian Jews. They made it against all odds of extrime anti-semitism, which was embedded into very system. Absolute majority of Soviet Jews are college educated and did very well.

Perfect examples.

My own ancestral background is quite typical for Russian Jews. My grandparents came here as children (with their parents) from Russia in the early 1900's, escaping Russian antisemitism, and having lived impoverished lives before that. (Think of Tevye's fsmily.) A generation after that (my parents and aunts/uncles), their offspring had college degrees.

And don't think they didn't face terrible antisemitism in this country, too. People weren't hiring Jews for jobs, many colleges had strict quotes about how many Jews they allowed in, and housing was restricted. Still, they managed to overcome their difficult life circumstances, and succeed. Please don't belittle, or refuse to acknowledge, the sacrifice, hard work, discipline, and other admirable traits that got them to that level.

Did you even read the post? Russia didn't have solutions - Russia had reigned down horrific problems on its minorities. The people succeeded despite that, and often in a period of a few short decades.
