NCS Reception

Ideally, she'd have been more diligent - and we, more vigilant- and she'd almost assuredly have been heading off with her more studious peers to a selective school.

How did her peers do with college acceptances this year?

Her classmates did very, very well.

Can you give some specifics? Placements at top 10 USNWR unis and slacs? % going to top 20?

Let's just say that there are a shipload of Stanford, Princeton, Penn, and Yale girls. It's an incredible school. I wish I could go back there and learn how to write. Just make sure your kid does as well.

So there are clearly some very child-specific variables that affected your daughter's outcome. Perhaps a general NCS forum is a misleading platform for your concerns. Sounds like she is a very small minority.

How many girls in this graduating class? 60-some?

I'm glad it's being discussed. Even best in show might have a flea or two.

But going beyond saying that she was wait-listed at a big State school (not Berkeley, Ann Arbor, or Chapel Hill either) wouldn't do much for my anonymity. We thought 2310 supplemented with 800 math level 2 would open more doors than it did. It's tough out there and it doesn't seem like Bs from NCS are worth that much more than Bs from less rigorous schools. EVEN WITH STELLAR SCORES. Again, not blaming the school. Just putting it out there. I'm not saying don't go to NCS. I'm saying that your daughter needs to hit the books hard and if she doesn't end up with very good grades, you might question your investment, which for some - like us- was relatively quite substantial. Good luck!

I have zero doubt that what you say is true. I applaud you for sharing your experience. My DC is basically a B student at a top 3 and is having a similar experience.

To those who doubt her story: All she is saying is not to assume that Bs at a top 3 will open doors to selective colleges. That's all. And that is a fact worth knowing prior to spending $40+K a year.

+1 (parent of a dd at a VERY well-known selective all girls' school in another city)

Thank you for posting. I think your story is worth thinking about; also not every child thrives in the intense academic scene at a Big 3.

What's shocking is that Bs from NCS didn't do anything for this girl. 2310 and 800 and wait listed at a school like South Carolina? What are the averages there? Wow. Might as well have been from a lousy school somewhere.

Shocking and horrifying

awww..were you trying to bring this dead thread back after NCS's amazing college placement this year?

I don't find this shocking or horrifying but rather a reality check that I will keep in mind as DC heads to another Big 3 for middle school next year. My DH has basically said: You're going there to make good grades. Bring home Bs and Cs and it's Hello Wilson.
