Crown boundary study Option H

What would be the basis or reasoning to ask them to intervene?

The only way an outside party MIGHT be able to force MCPS to do anything is if the boundaries are in anyway illegal or discriminatory.

Which while there may be people unhappy with the proposals, I don't think any of the proposed boundaries are either.

Like how far could they force a whole school district to be bussed?

I mean the obviously left out certain school districts as "protected" from being redrawn.

I am a Wootton parent. Wootton is a pressure cooker and the culture is uber competitive. It is not a healthy option for an average student. My son ended up with depression and anxiety half way through high school because of all the pressure. His sister and older brother had a much better experience at Churchill. What will end up happening if you combine Wootton and some of the average or underperforming kids from Gaithersburg is a totally skewed grading curve. These average kids will have no chance at normalcy.

Or maybe they will learn from the Wootton kids and make something of their lives. And the Wootton kids can learn from them that pressure cooker environment is not good and chill a bit.

Option H is a win-win for MCPS. I hope they do it.

There is some sort of unfinished space that supposedly can fit another 500 students should the need arise in the FUTURE. Finishing that section now is not included in the build plan or the CIP. My guess is that something was said last night about Crown having the ability to one day hold about 2700 students and people are running with that and freaking out assuming it means 2700 RIGHT NOW.

Option H right now says all of Wootton plus half of Rosemont. That's it. I doubt that's the full 2200 spaces. Based on scheduled testimony at today I am willing to bet the board has plans to also add at least part of Field's Road. Maybe that gets it to 2200.

Maybe we can wait until we have more information before panicking? This veil of secrecy around Option H is making it so much worse. Completely unacceptable it was just released without any context.

I doubt they’ll split articulate fields road to feed only a part to crown/wootton. Fields road has never been split in any options so far

Yes it will be all or nothing for both rosemont and fields if I had to guess. I don’t think they will have support to split them. But also-these kids are the kids who historically ended up in Gaithersburg HS. Have you been to Gaithersburg High school? Remember that Horrible SA case from a few years ago? All the teen pregnancies happening there? I imagine the quality of Crown will turn into the same level as GHS in a few years if this goes through. It’s an entirely different demographic with entirely different values (education not being one of them).

Have you heard of the weekly near overdoses at Wootton? You are disgusting to insinuate that your poor baby will somehow get pregnant by being in the same building as someone else who might be. This is one additional elementary school we are talking about.....It is not like Gaithersburg is moving to Crown and one Wootton elementary school is being asked to go there. Could you imagine the fall out from that?!

Finally the true thoughts on why Wootton parents are so hysterical is coming out. All your 3 miles is hard for the commute and property values will go down was just a facade. You don't want your kids to mix with the Black and Brown kids. You're afraid your precious kid might have a black or brown boyfriend or girlfriend and lose focus on studies.

ummm there are plenty of black and brown kids at Wootton so i’m not sure what you are talking about.

That will be a good thing. Don't protect any district from being redrawn.

I bet the Wootton parents are kicking themselves for even broaching the school is unsafe issue now. Well, MCPS heard your petition and is doing something about it. Good on MCPS.

I'm not sure if you're aware of current bussing distances. Where some students are on the bus for 40 minutes.

It definitely looks like there are some areas that help grease the wheels. And even though we originally weren't interested in living there, will have to put it into consideration once everything is finalized and we know what everything looks like.

I'm not against you. And I think the fact that Wootton kept getting pushed off is bs and there was some discrimination in it. But you'd need valid reasons and proof if you plan or hope to bring outside parties in to intervene.

I get 45-minute bus rides. I grew up in a rural county where the entire county went to one school K-12.

What is the reason for Wooton being required to bus three miles in urban/suburban setting? If it's oops bad planning. Isn't that evidence enough. MCPS has a problem bigger than they can handle.

I heard the Gaithersburg community is very angry about this. Maybe they will be loud enough to actually make people listen.

This is not bad planning. For once I think MCPS is doing the right thing - they are giving Gaithersburg residents what they need to prevent overcrowding and giving Wootton a new school 3 miles away so the kids are not in a school that is unsafe (at least that is what all these next door petitions were saying)

MCPS: We have addressed your petitions and will be moving you to Crown permanently along with some feeders from Gaithersburg

Wootton parents shocked that it will be a new Wootton with more URM: Bussing 3 miles is a problem

MCPS: We have addressed your concerns by moving some of the feeders to QO which is closer so you will not have a long commute

I sincerely hope Dufief and Travilah (all or part of it - the new homes on QO Rd) which are 2 miles from QO get zoned to QO, and Fields Road fully goes to Crown/Wootton.

Nope. Gaithersburg is not angry about it. They are glad to go to a brand new school with the Wootton kids

Sorry Wootton parents - you are not getting any support from Gaithersburg community when MCPS is finally doing the right thing now.

How likely is this option to happen?

Dufief and Travilah are the ones who care the least about this move since they are on a bus regardless. Those I have talked to actually like this option and welcome adding other schools to the wootton community. Also, there isn’t room at QO. Remember- this whole thing was to alleviate overcrowding at Crown and Gaithersburg? But that’s an inconvenient point when you just want to “punish” wootton kids.

Yes, geographical proximity should be the primary concern in boundary study.
