I don't think BKL posts here anymore, but she is a DCUM legend! She closes her kitchen for like 18 hours after hosting a holiday meal because she's afraid her piggish houseguests will drop crumbs or leave fingerprints on her stainless steel appliances if they make themselves a snack. If anybody is hungry they can walk to Burger King or take a delicious, healthy piece of fruit from the bowl on the breakfast bar (no need to set foot in the kitchen!) and eat it OUTSIDE in the FRESH AIR. She first appeared in page 8 of "no one eats in this house": https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/105/691252.page I served light appetizers for lunch and then a big dinner at 3 followed by dessert. After that, no more food - nada, zip. I'm still not that hungry this morning and my feet are sore from standing in the kitchen making that nice meal yesterday, so I'm not making breakfast this morning. Burger King is only a short 5 mile walk away. Signed, The Host |
Amazing. Please get video. |
I’m PP, and you just blew my mind. They never were sad that we stopped coming out for Thanksgiving!! Come to think of it, I do think they preferred going to dinner at their country club with friends over spending time with their kids and grandkids. In fact, that’s what my mom is doing tomorrow and she is so excited to dress up and go out with her “buddies.” Never once asked if we might consider coming out to see her. |
My ILs don’t make enough food and my SIL and BIL don’t notice so they eat a ton and I’lm left saying “one pancake is plenty.” |
Oh, the Midwest garage food really brings me back. This is one of my mother’s tried and true practices. (No, we don’t visit for holidays anymore.) These garage food people need to change their ways given how the climate has changed in the past 30-40 years. |
Another thread of why adults won’t say no, AND subject their kids to the BS and teach their kids to put up with bs. WTF would you stay somewhere that’s freezing cold and no full size oven ? |
Yeah in Cleveland growing up we could definitely do the “food on the patio” thing at Christmas - hell there was probably a snowbank on the patio by that point! It was see your breath freezing cold most years. Nowadays no way. That isn’t food safe. Even the garage beers and sodas are merely just “cool” now if stored outside, not outright cold. |
My Cleveland family is dispersed across the country and have not adjusted to their various new climates. They still store food as if the sunroom and garage are 30 degrees. Visit with caution! The best was my mom visiting my sibling in a place where garages have to be heated…and trying to store food out there. |
The red container in the basement freezer is full of dead chipmunks captured by shop vacs on previous Thanksgivings. |
Going to be? Some of you are already nuts. I read General Parenting. ![]() |
I know of a perfect Christmas gift for them: https://www.amazon.com/Good-Season-Italian-Dressing-Cruet/dp/B0D1YL8Z2R/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=2DWWSCFNJB5DC&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2yHrGmtG4ntIKUEYml0F3AQ70TbI3kSUU8InSUQdVpzgQUJnBiN7qEegQuGnsJiOMkUIj8xAIava9T6fuDAD2uZCwE88he2uf-uIFWClY9TDHzfd6q5f_CbzwNvRHZQlfcm4iutH0KSXqbEuILBzi2nFwrDceYaKWsgeymTNJoVTc3uNqQtO1nq6DsrLoEdqun4fPz0mW0Nd9Ldz_Qrhnw.LnBqYy6h0btsvh_MHCx9Qe6jf-rkQGeM1KxaAXGpMQs&dib_tag=se&keywords=italian+salad+dressing+kit&qid=1732744359&sprefix=italian+salad+dressing+kit%2Caps%2C263&sr=8-2 |
This is your mistake. Get in there and get your fill. Let the chips fall where they may. |
I’m in Wisconsin and it’s 29 degrees. I have confidence in our garage food |
