Given how sleepy the religion forum was for a while until recently, I'm guessing OP is the atheist (singular). Not sure why it brings OP so much joy to jump down the throats of theists regularly, but I guess we all have to find our purpose in life somewhere. |
If you're not sure why, then you are not paying attention, maybe on purpose. It's been explained over and over again. Religion is causing the rights of people to be curtailed and denied. It is a cancer on society. If you are part of the religious community - even if you are politically against the individual issues - your tacit approval makes you part of the problem. It can't be explained any more explicitly or brutally than that. |
And posting on an internet forum is the best way to defend people's rights...how? |
Who said it was the best way? But it is a way to make people realize things they didn't - or claimed not to - before. As we just demonstrated with you. |
Is your purpose jumping down the throats of atheists? and what do you mean, you're "guessing OP is the atheist (singular)"? I'm OP and have been mainly listening and sometimes agreeing with other atheists. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as some of the posters here. Interesting conversation, though. I do notice that the discussion seems to be exclusively about atheism vs Christianity - with little or no mention of other religions, or even different Christian denominations. Given that different denominations of Christianity used to fight bitterly, it makes me hopeful for a future when religious people leave atheists alone. Remember the Catholics vs the Protestants? Then the different forms of Protestantism disagreeing vehemently and splitting off from each other? Such religious differences are barely mentioned on DCUM |
Have you lived abroad? In other countries (mainly Western Europe/Australia/NZ), the nones are the majority and people are put off by religious displays by politicians, leaders, sports people, entertainers and everyday citizens. People in the US may not be aware how religion infiltrates life to a greater degree than elsewhere e.g. prayers, blessings, attitudes, judgments. Atheists do notice more. |
I didn't know that -- Looking forward to the day when religion has less influence here in the USA. I did notice that last time that I was in Europe, that many of the small churches had been turned into art galleries, markets, etc., while the cathedrals had been preserved - mainly for tourists, it seemed. The cathedrals are great works of art, religion aside. |
In France there aren't enough priests to go around anymore, and they rotate between parishes now. We visited a huge church in the center of France that sees services once a month according to the posted calendar. My mother-in-law's funeral service was conducted by a lay person - a woman interestingly, even though female priests aren't allowed in the catholic church. Certainly, in other western countries, excess churches are being sold off as homes, cafes and art galleries. Thanks -- very interesting, e.g.,: "...the U.S. is the only country out of 102 examined in the study that has higher-than-average levels of both prayer and wealth. In every other country surveyed with a gross domestic product of more than $30,000 per person, fewer than 40% of adults say they pray every day." The whole thing is good -- I suggest that everyone read it. |
Ha! Women are good enough to do a funeral only when you can't find a priest to do it! |
This is not true at all through much of Africa, Asia, and South America where Christianity and religion in general are very much on the rise. It’s a very western view that claims to be well informed and cosmopolitan and ironically shows just how ignorant you are about the rest of the world. |
I'm afraid that it shows what a poor reader you are. pp mentions only Western Europe/Australia/NZ. |
Here's another cosmopolitan ignorant observation for my critic - the happiest countries in the world are the most secular.

The implication was that I am a world traveler and religion is dying all over the world. Precisely the opposite is true. |
Interesting -- and that it's published in a Christian magazine. Look here for their very typically overall Christian point of view. https://www.faithonview.com/about/spiritual-foundations-statement/ The article itself quotes well-known atheist author and survey researcher, Phil Zuckerman. |
