Is your purpose jumping down the throats of atheists? and what do you mean, you're "guessing OP is the atheist (singular)"?

I'm OP and have been mainly listening and sometimes agreeing with other atheists.  I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as some of the posters here.  Interesting conversation, though.

I do notice that the discussion seems to be exclusively about atheism vs Christianity - with little or no mention of other religions, or even different Christian denominations. Given that different denominations of Christianity used to fight bitterly, it makes me hopeful for a future when religious people leave atheists alone.   Remember the Catholics vs the Protestants? Then the different forms of Protestantism disagreeing vehemently and splitting off from each other?

Have you lived abroad? In other countries (mainly Western Europe/Australia/NZ), the nones are the majority and people are put off by religious displays by politicians, leaders, sports people, entertainers and everyday citizens.

People in the US may not be aware how religion infiltrates life to a greater degree than elsewhere e.g. prayers, blessings, attitudes, judgments. Atheists do notice more.[/quote]

I didn't know that -- Looking forward to the day when religion has less influence here in the USA.

I did notice that last time that I was in Europe, that many of the small churches had been turned into art galleries, markets, etc., while the cathedrals had been preserved - mainly for tourists, it seemed.  The cathedrals are great works of art, religion aside.

In France there aren't enough priests to go around anymore, and they rotate between parishes now. We visited a huge church in the center of France that sees services once a month according to the posted calendar. My mother-in-law's funeral service was conducted by a lay person - a woman interestingly, even though female priests aren't allowed in the catholic church. Certainly, in other western countries, excess churches are being sold off as homes, cafes and art galleries.
