Cannot believe if all the things going on that this is something people want to fight about. If you are not a US citizen you should not be voting. If there was a mistake on you checking wrong box then this is easily fixed.

Describe how this would be fixed and how easy that would be. Would an email do it?

They were asked in the letter to provide proof of citizenship to the registrar’s office within 14 days. They didn’t.

You haven't answered the question. What had to happen for them to prove citizenship? Fourteen days is not very long when you are a working person.

Basically, the SC just invalidated a very straight forward law. By fiat.

Also, I'm worried that this opens the floodgates to other states tossing 10's of thousands off the voter rolls between now and Election Day.

Early vote NOW!

That’s not what the law says though, you are able to amend the voter rolls in an individualized process.

Youngkin clearly did not do an "individualized" process. It was systematic - they purged folks with the same name as recent immigrants.

The SC basically just told Youngkin and anyone else who wants to purge the voter rolls that they do not have to follow the plain-letter federal law.

Some letters were sent to the wrong addresses. Some letters arrived at homes AFTER the 14 day deadline to respond.

It's all in the NPR article.

Again, it’s a voter’s responsibility to update their mailing address when they move. And that’s still no justification for the original judge to put noncitizens back on the rosters.

correct! if it was to get a tax return i bet they would ensure the address was correct. Being a citizen has responsibilities

We will see what the court decides but I disagree given the specificities that Va was on keying in on - self identification and lack of follow up.

I think a U.S. citizens fundamental right to vote should not be taken away because you moved addresses.

You seem much more focused on the noncitizen element than the fact that U.S. citizens had their rights taken away by Youngkin. Care to explain?

I guess rule of law only matters for immigrants. Youngkin doesn't have to follow the law.

The law is that noncitizens can’t vote.

Also that there's no purging of voter rolls within 90 days of the election.

There are multiple laws, including a law saying a state can't purge voters systematically within 90 days of an election. The reason for this law is that systematic purges like this capture eligible voters as has been documented multiple times in the case of Youngkin's executive order.

The corrupt SCOTUS is encouraging the GOP to break this law right now, less than a week before. Election Day. It's disgusting and horrifying.

So far all those tossed off have been Democrats; the maga pps have no problem with that. As Trump has projected, they’re cheating 12 different ways wherever they can.

This Trump supporter was labeled a noncitizen and kicked off Texas’ voter rolls

https://www.texastribune.org/2024/10/29/texas-noncitizen-voter-roll-removal-mary-howard-elley/

Mary Howard-Elley fervently believes illegal immigration in the U.S. is a critical problem that only former President Donald Trump can solve. She says the continuation of his border wall and promised mass deportations will make the country safer.

She agrees with Trump’s unfounded claims that Democrats are opening the borders to allow noncitizens to vote, fearing that it could ultimately cost him the election.

Howard-Elley didn’t pay much attention when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott helped fuel that narrative by announcing that the state had removed thousands of supposed noncitizens from its rolls, claiming some had a history of voting.

Then the U.S. citizen learned she was among them.

The retired Transportation Security Administration agent was confused by how the county could come to that conclusion. And she seethed at the idea that anyone would question the citizenship of a former federal employee with the “whitest name you could have.”

She got a letter, provided her documents, assumed the issue was resolved, only to learn when REPORTERS called her she had been purged. Then election officials told her on Oct 14 it was too late to fix it for this year's election, so news organizations brought the issue up to the state who said the local official was wrong.

“Who is allowing people to do this to United States citizens? I understand we have a problem with immigration, but come on now,” Howard-Elley said in an interview.

“The system is very flawed,” Howard-Elley said. “I feel really sad that we’re in a situation like this. You would think in 2024 we wouldn’t have issues like this.”

She intends to cast her ballot for Trump.

People who gave recently become citizens have paperwork to document their citizenship. You receive it at your ceremony.

Va still has in person voter registration up until Election Day as well.

whats even crazier is that you don't need photo id to vote in Virginia, it says the following, a fricking utility bill lol which doesn't validate citizenship, so imagine if someone illegally is registered they could vote.

Accepted Forms of ID for Voting:

  • Voter Confirmation Documents: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Voter confirmation documents are issued upon registration, and proof of citizenship is generally only checked at the time of initial registration (not for every voter action).

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Virginia driver’s licenses do not typically require proof of citizenship—just proof of residency in the state.

  • Valid United States Passport: Proof of Citizenship Required: YES. A U.S. passport does require proof of citizenship at the time of issuance.

  • Other Government-Issued ID by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the United States (excluding Driver Privilege Cards and Identification Privilege Cards): Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Most other state-issued or U.S. government IDs, aside from passports, do not require proof of citizenship—only proof of residency or legal presence is needed.

  • Valid Student ID Card from Higher Education Institutions or Private Schools in Virginia: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Student IDs are issued by educational institutions and do not verify citizenship.

  • Valid Student ID Card with Photo from Higher Education Institutions in Other U.S. States or Territories: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Out-of-state student IDs do not require proof of citizenship for issuance.

  • Valid Employee ID Card with Photo from the Voter’s Employer: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. Employee IDs are issued by employers to confirm employment and do not require proof of citizenship.

  • A Copy of a Current Utility Bill, Bank Statement, Government Check, Paycheck, or Other Government Document with Voter's Name and Address: Proof of Citizenship Required: NO. These documents serve as proof of residence or identity but do not verify citizenship.

  • If an individual is already registered to vote, these forms of ID simply validate their registration on election day; they do not serve as proof of citizenship. Therefore, someone could validate their registration without needing to prove citizenship if they were previously registered through valid or possibly erroneous means. This setup focuses on confirming the identity of registered voters rather than verifying their citizenship status at the polls.

Ultimately, this means that the focus on election day is to ensure registered voters are who they say they are, not to re-confirm their eligibility based on citizenship.

There is no proof citizenship ID other than a US passport. If you want to advocate for a free national ID card available only to citizens, be my guest.

No we can just use passports.

How is a citizen who was improperly removed from the voter rolls going to obtain a passport before the election?
