TJ Failure to Notify Letter of Commendation Winners

"NTI" stands for "not turned in". In what world is that cryptic? You wrote it out yourself!

Recognition by National Merit opens the door to millions of dollars in college scholarships and 800 Special Scholarships from corporate sponsors.

Yes, if you are a finalist. That pathway is not available to Commended recipients. It's disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

One former student said he learned he had won the award through a random email from the school to a school-district email account that students rarely check

If you're not checking your school email, that's on you. Students are expected to check those emails regularly.

But homeroom teachers didn’t distribute the awards until Monday, November 14, after the early-application deadlines had passed.

OK, Bonitatibus/Kosatka/whoever definitely dropped the ball here. No arguing with that.

Bonitatibus didn’t notify parents or the public.

If the school informed all the recipients, they've done their job. They're high schoolers, they can inform their parents themselves. Also, you can't possibly expect a school with as many awardees as TJ to go through and publicly acknowledge hundreds of kids -- that's a waste of time and energy they could have spent teaching or doing some other productive work.

What’s more, it could be a civil rights violation, says local parent advocate Debra Tisler, with most TJ students in a protected class of "gifted" students

Huh? The law is very clear about what counts as a protected class, and "gifted" is most certainly not on that list.

Bonitatibus still hasn’t ... told parents from earlier years that their students won the awards.

Because it's water under the bridge. Your kid is in college (or beyond) -- an award for a test they took in their junior year of high school is irrelevant at this point. Plus, with the sheer number of Commended recipients at TJ, individually contacting them over something they likely won't care about by now is a waste of everyone's time.

Should TJ administration have done a better job notifying Commended recipients ahead of the early application deadlines? Absolutely. But it seems to me that Asra is making a mountain out of a molehill here with some rather specious claims. This is not an "equity" issue; it's essentially an unwise decision on the administration's end, and it really doesn't deserve the attention it's gotten on this board and elsewhere.

A lot of lies here. You wokesters must be worried. Kids were harmed and people are pissed.

US’ top high school hid over 1,200 students’ academic achievement in the name of ‘equity’

For years, administrators at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) concealed students’ National Merit certifications in the name of “equity,” according to a new report.

I can understand, when it comes to most awards (e.g. most popular, best science project...), it should suffice for the school to give it to the student only. However, when the award has scholarship implications (in this case, "Special Scholarships"), the parent also needs to be notified because financing college is the parents' responsibility. Kosatka and Zuliega both know this, which is why they apologized for the "mistake." TJ is in the wrong. Period. There is no need to argue any further about this point or to respond to the racist posters who are trying to make the victims feel bad. The only issue that remains is how TJ and FCPS should be held accountable for their wrongdoing.

On Sept. 16, National Merit sent the principal the names of 240 “Commended Students,” but it was not until mid-November when homeroom teachers distributed the accolades — after early-application deadlines had already passed.

“Keeping these certificates from students is theft by the state,” said lawyer Shawna Yashar, whose son also learned that he was a “Commended Student” too late. In a call with Kosatka, she learned that the decision to withhold the news from parents and notify students in a “low-key way” was intentional.

Asra is just butthurt that her kid never told her.

Poor kid. She’s still using him to advance her political agenda.

Principal should resign and be done with it.

Is that why you’re pushing this faux issue? Because you don’t like the principal?

Overwhelming majority of the TJ students do not like her so she should resign.

Yes but not because of this. Their complaints are a separate matter and should be considered separately. No TJ student is calling for her to resign over this incident.

It’s no secret Bonitatubus is a disaster.

EXACTLY! While a scholarship is a nice-to-have for these Karens who are victim shaming, there are many families who desperately need scholarships in order to send their kids to college. To these families, this intentional omission is a big deal. To the Karens, this intentional omission is just a bunch of nobodies making a mountain out of a molehill. Check your privilege, Karen.

I’m not in trouble, Karen (or Vanessa). But Bonitatibus certainly has managed to alienate many folks with her clumsy “leadership.”
