Dear A$$hole Dog Owner: pick up your dog's poop

Anonymous
Our next door neighbor's yard is FULL of their dog's poop. Is that normal? I just wish we/they had a fence. I've found it on our driveway a couple times, too. Both times I just threw it back onto their driveway.

Yuck. This attracts rats and bugs as well as stinking up the n'hood. It sounds like you're not in DC. Is there anyone in your jurisdiction to whom you can report unsanitary conditions?

It's too bad DC won't enforce quality of life regulations like poop-scooping and leash laws on public property, but I thought the rat control people would at least respond (maybe ineffectively) to something like PP's problem here.

BTW, urine also has a corrosive effect on buildings, so dog (and human) pee aimed at historic (or merely charming, old, and expensive) buildings is really such a shame.

What always gets to me is how fast these complaints turn into a free for all against all dogs and all owners. I posted about how I always pick up my dog's poo and someone posted that they don't beleive me. And then people start railing against how someone let their dog wander into their yard. Newsflash, this is not standard dog owner behavior any more than every single driver on the beltway is looking to cut you off. There are assholes among every population. Anyone who let their dog run into someone's dog and then acted beligerantly about it qualifies as an asshole. But the way some of you are going off about all dogs, etc, you just sound like you've got a personal vendetta against all dogs or those of us who own one. The thing is, dogs are going to be a part of your life or not. I'm sure it takes much more effort to be nasty about it than it does to be nice.

Oh, and by the way, the woman who put the dog poo in the neighobor's mail slot? That I love. If someone is clearly NOT doing their part, they should get called on the carpet. But I can't tell you how many times I've been told to "pick up my dog's poop" by some busybody before the shit even had a chance to hit the pavement. To anyone passing by it probably looked like I wasn't going to do it anyway, which I was.

So maybe if some of you back off a little bit, you'll still have to deal with the occasional turd in your yard, but you might just find yourself a little bit less high strung in general?

Over time, urine damages plants. In DC neighborhoods with high dog density like Adams Morgan and Dupont, grass, flower beds, and other plantings not protected by walls/ fences look like crap because of this cumulative damage. I can imagine Old Town having these issues, too.

Not really. Most of my friends in Old Town take their dogs to the dog parks.

In neighborhoods like mine where there are so many dogs, so many inconsiderate owners, and so much cumulative (mostly public) property damage and filth left in their wake, these are legitimate expressions of anger regarding a real problem. I don't doubt that there are considerate dog owners, but there are so many inconsiderate ones who spoil so much in my neighborhood that you're all under suspicion.

We have dog parks in Adams Morgan and Dupont too, but we still have dog crap and urine damage all over the place, as well as dogs off-leash on public sidewalks several blocks away from the dog parks.

We are in Montgomery County. We have an HOA, I wonder if I can report them anonymously.

One bad apple spoils the whole bunch. When you've had your yard ruined by dogs, it's not easy to see past the horrible dog owners.

We have [illegal] dog parks in Georgetown, but we have BAD problems with dog crap and urine damage too - the urine kills everything planted in the sidewalk tree boxes. And yes, lots of rude dog owners think they're above the law and walk around with unleashed dogs that scare the hell out of little kids. It's a real problem.

The problem is that when ONE rude dog owner lets his dog off leash, lots of other dog owners apparently start thinking that their dog is really special too (like above the law) and they let THEIR dogs off leash. And so on.

I also notice that the worst offenders are very lonely, disconnected people. It's not usually the nice families who are letting their dogs poop all over the sidewalk.

We had a dog come into our house (in MoCo). Just walked right up the driveway, scared my 2 kids in the carport, then waltzed inside and sat down (the door was open because we were just leaving, hence the kids in the carport). I about saw red. Why not put a leash on your freaking dog? At least it didn't poop in my house. But if you see your unleashed dog walk right up someone's driveway and start harassing some little kids, wouldn't you at least TRY to call it back?

I too love the poop in the mail slot poster. Terrific.

Well, then that is sort of your problem, isn't it?
I'm not the poster you're responding to, but with whom I agree 100%, but your attitude just stinks (no pun intended). I always -ALWAYS- pick up after my dog. And, I'm currently having an issue with a neighbor in my 'hood that routinely lets their dog off lead to take a poo on the side of the road in a common area. I'm sick of it and currently debating how to handle it (they are not with the dog when it does its business). So, I get that it is annoying, gross, etc. But, if you start hovering over me and commenting on what I need to do with my dog, I'm going to tell you where to shove it. Because at that point, YOU are the one being rude and presumptuous.

There are bad seeds in any demographic. You know that. You all know that. To make such sweeping generalizations is stupid. I think the person who confronted the neighbor and dumped the poop through the mail slot was right on. That idiot neighbor should have a dose of what s/he was dishing out.

But it's also your problem if dog owners earn a bad reputation collectively and you can't walk your animal to the flower box without hovering citizens presuming you're one of the (many) guilty ones.

How did you get it out?

I kind of started to pick him up and he turned around and walked out. Seemed a pretty well-behaved, friendly dog (he scared the kids, but that's only cause they're little and the dog was bigger than them, but not HUGE). But WTF? My kids LIKE dogs, they just don't like being jumped on by dogs they don't know. And I do NOT want someone else's pet in my house!

Seems to me like this thread (relatively few grossly inconsiderate dog owners making all regular dog owners look bad) reminds me of the one about parents flying with little kids. MOST parents/dog owners are fine, but the ones that aren't REALLY stand out (and sometimes are really REALLY horrible excuses for people).

I'd like to believe this, but there is always SO MUCH fresh crap all over my neighborhood that even when I remind myself there are a lot of dogs around, it seems a significant percentage of walkers each day fail to pick up.
