What parts of her story or struggles do you feel she is misrepresenting? How would you describe Julia’s personality during the time she was practicing Ultra Orthodox?

I did not know her well as I am from a much stricter community (that she is pretending to be from). She went to a very academic high school which was probably the equivalent of a dcum private school education. She was well known and liked and considered talented and successful.

I haven't watched the show but based on reading about it it sounds like narcissism /borderline to me. She did like attention even when she was religious.

Do you watch secular TV?

What about the morning prayer she referenced, which the males say, "Thank G-d I'm not a woman"? Is that a loose translation, or no?

Yes. She omits a lot of good parts. She took a lot from her community and proceeded to back stab them and badmouth them in public. Any goodwill she had from years ago is gone.

No one would ever do such a show about a woman from a strict Muslim background.

No I do not. I didn't grow up with it although I live in a much more left wing community now.

Are her children welcome in the community? is her son- who is between both worlds considered part of the fold or ostracized?

It's an exact translation. Women say "that god made me the way He wanted". I personally don't feel offended, but feel free to take offense on my behalf.

I am curious how someone who claims to know this woman happened to be on DCUM and land in this thread.

There are a lot of fringes to the community. They are probably not trusted by my old community but have their own community of like minded people. There's even an organization called Footsteps that supports people leaving the ultra orthodox community. I personally really dislike them, they pressured someone i knew to eat bacon, but my point is that she's pretending to be a lot more unique than she really is. There are lots of people who grow up orthodox and leave, this is something we write about regularly and sadly in our newspapers, this is not some rare thing. And some are successful.

People are people wherever you go.

Wait just to be clear does it literally translates to men saying "thank G-d I'm not a woman." and for women, "thank God that he made me the way He wanted." is that correct?

Also, at what age did you marry?

More or less. Blessed are you God our God king of the world, not thank you but yes that's an exact Hebrew translation.

PP. I'll call myself OJ2. My husband and I are Modern Orthodox, but my children attend a school that I would describe as open-minded ultra-Orthodox. I have no connection to Monsey or Julia.

Haredi is more general. It subdivides into strict Sephardic, Hassidic, and what we call Litvish/ yeshivisg which are distinct ultra orthodox cultures.
