Yes, it is very common to wear wigs as head coverings especially if you interact with the secular world. Only a few groups forbid wigs. Many forbid lace fronts which look too natural.

I don’t think this is a planned storyline either. They reportedly filmed the second season before any of this happened. I mean focal point of the second season is on the eldest daughter’s divorce.

It was so obvious her interest in him was only about money. I watched Season 1 and totally thought he seemed annoyed with her spending and of having to fund that very lavish lifestyle for her kids.
