I've kept them alive for 8 years

I hate her, and tell her every time we chat.

I provided these creatures with all they needed to thrive, as humanely as possible. One is dying in tank right now. Still gasping. I'm heartbroken that it's lingering.

What do I do? Should I take it's mate out of tank? How do I end the suffering of the other?

10 years ago door dash didn't exist

I made a mistake, they dumped the fish bag 8 years ago when door dash didn't exist. I used "door dash" as a catch phrase to describe knock and run pranks that kids do these days.

OP, I am a "fish person." The quickest way to kill a suffering fish is actually to cut the head off very quickly. Most people, including me, are uncertain we can do it quickly enough, so the next kindest thing is freezing. Place the fish in a tupperware with water and place in the freezer. Fish will die before the water freezes.

Please don't flush live fish, it's cruel.

Also, while I agree fish as carnival prizes are inhumane, it's not really relevant anymore. These are your pets. Your job is to usher them out of the world as kindly as possible.

You do not need to do anything for the other fish unless it's also sick. Do change the water in case one fish was reacting to something in the water.

Contrary to general opinion, fish can be very challenging to care for.

This is why I have a dog, bird, rodents, but no fish yet.

Well done for having kept them alive all these years, OP.
I don't know what you should do now, but I just want to support you.

Thank you, means a lot - OP

I don't think I can do it pp!

My son just left to buy a new tank, and filter for the healthy fish. That one is large and needs a shorter tank with larger footprint to swim. It's on the counter in laundry room next to sink with hose. Easy to clean and maintain all these years. We'll clean the old tank and accessories and leave on the hated friends porch, with a death announcement that Tina died.

Don't bring up past transgressions no matter how much you hate your "friend". She will just trash it and wonder why you are so aggressive about something from 8 yrs ago. Just trash the tank, it's old and could leak or have bacteria bad for other fish if reused.

Don't trash the fish tank. It can certainly be reused. If you don’t want it, someone else will.

Well, this thread took a weird turn. Always leave it to DCUM to find a way to parent shame.

We should shame the unnecessary martyrs so they stop the attention-grabbing suffering.

Wow‼️
Ten yrs is a L-O-N-G life span for a mere goldfish!

And I agree w/the poster who told you that you are a good-hearted person.
You truly are!

I couldn’t keep DD’s beta fish alive longer than 8 months. But 8 years? Wow! I’m really impressed.

She's referring to ding dong ditch. Don't be purposefully obtuse.

+1 And PP, where did you get the idea that OP is breeding goldfish? I got one am touched by OP’s caring heart. Years ago my roommate af the find had a pair of goldfish that lived a long time. When one died, the other died very soon after. I think they do notice the absence of their mate.
