I've kept them alive for 8 years

It is a fish. OMG, the drama. If you want to end it’s suffering, take it out of the tank and hit it in the head.

You seem extremely dramatic.

I'm not breeding them! It's not dead yet. Not flushing it. They goldfish came as a pair in a plastic bag (carnival) dropped on our stoop by a parent I hate. She thought it was funny, and made her kid knock on the door, then dash. Yes, I tell her I hate her often. We are friends, but I hate her. Another parent gave my son (now 18) one of those frogs in a cube for his 5th birthday. That guy lived about 5 years. They used to sell them at toy stores, believe it's been banned. People suck!!

My DH got a snake for his birthday from a friend. My MIL was displeased to say the very least.

It's sad for us humans but as Ted Lasso says goldfish are the animals with the shortest memory so the goldfish widow/widower will be OK.

During this time, your DD learned to navigate the hallways of a high school by herself, drive a car, and probably have sex. But she can’t care for goldfish?

It was much easier for me to learn how to have sex than how to care for a goldfish. Just saying…

+1!

OP, have you given yourself the cycle of life pep talk? You have been a wonderful caretaker, and the goldfish in your care survived much longer than the cicadas

What is a frog in a cube? Not being snarky, just honestly don't know.

The psychic energy that it must require for OP to maintain a decade long friendship with a woman she hates—and regularly tells her she hates—is astounding to me. Why would either of these women remain in this relationship? That’s way more interesting than the fish question.

Contrary to general opinion, fish can be very challenging to care for.

This is why I have a dog, bird, rodents, but no fish yet.

Well done for having kept them alive all these years, OP.
I don't know what you should do now, but I just want to support you.

I hate her, and tell her every time we chat.

I provided these creatures with all they needed to thrive, as humanely as possible. One is dying in tank right now. Still gasping. I'm heartbroken that it's lingering.

What do I do? Should I take it's mate out of tank? How do I end the suffering of the other?
You've been telling her this for 10 years? Either you're saying this to be dramatic or you need help.

OMG, hahaha. I've heard it said that Germany is a land with no humor (full credit to Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy) but Germans have nothing on the grim judgy women of DCUM who can't spot a joke when it's pounded on their heads.
- Not OP, but laughed at her post. Sorry about the fish woes, OP!

Antacid tablet - the tablets that fizz. They take the oxygen out of the water and the fish die quickly.

Every time I scroll past this my brain assumes you are talking about kids and I think to myself “good job, kids sure aren’t easy!”

Fish also die quickly if you take them out of the water. How is "deoxygenating" the water more humane than just pulling them out?

OP, you could pull it out and guillotine it quickly with a butcher knife. Very little suffering that way.

Fish forums usually say put them in the freezer to euthanize but I would prefer to just die in the home I know

C'mon it's still alive!! I'm so upset. Yes, I know it's a fish. But some of you might recognize me from a couple of posts over the years. I am very much an empath, and I swear to you all, have never killed a bug (knowingly) or any living creature. I've rescued birds, turtles, kittens, and when my son was little, all his friends were at our house. A few would cry if they had to leave. Now, there all off to college in the fall and I'm soooooooo freakin happy! I made sure my parents remained independent and cared for until the end. Grandparents, check!

Yes, I hate my friend. She is aware. Her daughter and my son are best friends. Yes, my son is very responsible. He does a ton of errands, internship for 2 years, picks up the tab here and there. He's been googling and called the vet (they know us very well). But, this muthafishfukka just won't let go! I'm praying to St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Not sure if Assisi has governance over aquatic vertebrae.
