Yes, the WaPo story noted that her strength coach is also her swim coach at Yorktown. AAC is private swim through the county. It's a good upbeat story for YHS and Arlington in general. |
Elite swimmers' success is developed by their private club coaches and NOT high schools.
Michael Phelps attended Towson High School which did not even have a swim team when he went there. |
Strength coach - during the pandemic when she wasn't able to train in pools. Yes, so he was her swim coach for the YHS swim team. I'm sure she's had additional outside YHS training. It's a testament to the athlete and her swim coaches - whoever and wherever they are. It is not a testament to Yorktown HS. |
For those interested in Torri, not just fighting over Yorktown, she’s in the finals for the 200 IM after placing 6th in the semis last night. Her fly was phenomenal but she was caught by the end of the backstroke. Unlikely she will earn a spot but three other events to go! |
This is so exciting and hopefully something we can all be positive about. My kids won't attend Yorktown but I don't understand why some people feel the need to be so critical about that school. if you don't think it is a good school, don't buy a house in-bounds for Yorktown and your kids won't go there. Done and done. |
It’s OP who suggested that this young woman’s success in the pool somehow validates Yorktown and should insulate the school from being accurately described in other threads as a high school that consistently under-performs for a school with its wealthy demographics. |
Does anyone know if Torri swam for a summer team? Pure curiosity since NVSL is presently dominating my time. |
She did not. Only AAC and Yorktown High School. |
Isn’t NVSL just for fun? Why would it dominate your time? |
Meets twice a week plus practice everyday. It's fun but it does take over... |
That seems aptly what I was thinkinb |
Great school 6 |
I’m a lot more impressed by the Wakefield girls winning the state rowing title (VASRA) today than I am by the fact that a single top swimmer happens to attend Yorktown. Crew is actually a team sport and the coaches clearly are building an excellent program. |
Wow. That’s actually huge. That rowing title would be the first Varsity 8 state championship boat in Wakefield HS history. Hope the school puts a banner up. |
Right. It’s a quick season but very intense. I enjoy most of the volunteering and parent socializing, but the real fun is for the kids. |
