Northam Not Committed to Signing 5d/wk Bill

This is true too. To be fair, northam said kids could be in school in august. And if you have money for tuition, your kids could have been in all year.

But this area is living in a special bubble of fear, wanting masks and distancing and restrictions forever and ever. And then on top of that, FCPS has a weak leader and a school board that cares more about their own personal agenda than the kids.

He said that, but his BOE is handing out waivers like it's their primary function. I'm sure the private is open, so there is no problem argument will play very well.

If he adds an emergency clause (which another article indicated he WAS considering), it goes the legislature in their April session and they have to pass that. Your choice if you want to advocate for that or no.

Here's his email form link: https://www.governor.virginia.gov/constituent-services/communicating-with-the-governors-office/

Here's a sample email.

Dear Governor Northam,
As a concerned Fairfax County <parent/teacher/whatever you want here>, I am writing to ask you to sign SB 1303. In Fairfax County our children are just beginning to return to school 2 days a week after nearly a year of learning remotely. Study after study has shown that in-person learning is vastly superior to distance learning for most students and provides the quality education that our Virginia Constitution guarantees us. The legislature passed this bill with broad bipartisan support and many in both parties in Virginia support five days of in-person learning for school year 2021-2022. Please recognize this bipartisan coalition with your signature on the bill. Please also do not allow any districts waivers from the minimum number of instructional hours next fall.

Sincerely,
<YOUR NAME>

Done. Thank you. I added a paragraph about having voted for him in 2019 and helping flip VA blue. And that this was my voting issue.

It's a multi- layer problem in VA.

1) Our governor does not like to lead by making firm decisions, he prefers wishy washy leadership over actual leadership.

2) The Virginia Dept of Education, is run by a bunch of incompetent and personal agenda driven people that know their leader will interfere with them.

3) The Fairfax County Superintendent and the School board are run by a bunch of incompentent personal agenda driven people that know that their leader will not interfere with them

Even with problems 1 and 2, if 3 was different we could still run effectively despite top down issues. But when all three are corrupted= We Lose.

#2 should be "not interfere"^^^

3 can't be changed this election cycle, 1 and 2 can be

Yes, I agree. While there may always be some level of dysfunction, we can't have all 3 dysfunctional.

Yes, let’s please vote the pro-pandemic party into office because you’re mad that the mess they caused is inconvenient.

I want school back 5 days but the likely Rep nominee believes in Qanon so I would really recommend against being a single issue voter, as important as this is to many of us.

DP. I completely agree with you, but I’m also concerned enough people may vote on this single issue to flip the governorship and really screw all of us.

Then I suggest you contact Northam's office and recommend that he sign this bill.

+1. I’m a single I sue voter on this. Not having schools fully open in November means that we again hit the holidays and wait until March. Nope. That’s a red line for me.

The Republican party condoned an attack on the Capitol and our democracy. You cannot be serious that you would vote for a Republican because they give lip service to opening schools against social distancing guidelines. The Republicans are targeting soccer moms with this tactic. Be smarter.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/03/05/health-202-virginia-legislators-try-force-return-5-day-in-person-school/

The analysis also points out the impossibility of providing 5 days in FCPS and other NOVA districts of 6 feet is still the guidance.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll be doubling down on efforts to tell him follow the science and if 5 days a week is not safe/imprudent, not to do it. The vast majority of people are keeping their kids home for DL -- I want to be sure the schools focus on meeting THEIR needs, not the needs of impatient twits who think COVID-19 is no big deal and we should just pretend like it never happened.

This is patently untrue.

I just don't understand why this has to be made a law?

I want 5 days a week of school in the fall. But of course they need to drop all distancing requirements to get there. I suspect masking may stay, and ventilation will be improved (air purifiers all over). I'd support that. But is their funding for this in the bill?

I also think they should have some sort of plan for virtual school, but make it MUCH more centralized than it is now. At least organize it at the county level, not the school level. Allow kids to do activities at their school, but have the classes be countywide. Is there funding for this in the bill?

Last I heard, the aspect that he was “reviewing” was the emergency clause, to get it into effect immediately as opposed to the beginning of the next school year. The bill passed with large bipartisan support including many senators and delegates from Northern VA.

Local reporting in the Washington Post is really second-rate.

I don’t even care about this year anymore. I will take my 2 days now to get 5 in the fall.

Yes but it’s really important for special ed kids who
Qualify to get in person summer school.
