I want school back 5 days but the likely Rep nominee believes in Qanon so I would really recommend against being a single issue voter, as important as this is to many of us.

I wish everyone would email the VA GOP and tell them that if they put forward someone like Kirk Cox or anyone maybe slightly more moderate than $%#@$ Amanda Chase, they might have a chance of winning.

the election is in November. If my kids are still Hybrid, I'll vote a straight R ticket without even looking at the names. By that point I expect my office to be open and any understanding to be gone, so my kids will have at least one unemployed parent and I'll blame the school board and the state government that enabled them

DP. I completely agree with you, but I’m also concerned enough people may vote on this single issue to flip the governorship and really screw all of us.

I will. My kid can’t vote. So, I’m voting for her. FCPS won’t go 5 days a week unless forced. If Dems can’t show leadership on this at the state or local level, it’s time for a change. I’m not voting for a party that cares more about teachers unions than schools. It’s that simple.

My kid over my party.

Then I suggest you contact Northam's office and recommend that he sign this bill.

That doesn't make much sense. Most people prefer DL.

I think the majority prefer in person. That said, I believe a fairly sizable minority support DL. I think people who don’t admit this are going to be in for a shock come the next Governor election. I already voted with my feet and accepted private slots over the weekend.

+1. I’m a single I sue voter on this. Not having schools fully open in November means that we again hit the holidays and wait until March. Nope. That’s a red line for me.

I don't understand all the talk of red vs blue. We moved here from an extremely liberal county and blue state and they are back 4 days a week. This area is just stupid. And yes, we will be moving back, but its sad that the area my husband and I grew up in has evolved to this sh*tshow.

FCPS teacher here. If we do not start school next fall with 5 days a week, I will be very upset and will likely be one of those voting to flip it red. Unfortunately, I realize that would not really solve the problem... but how else am I supposed to react?

One issue voting rarely helps.

The red v. blue talk somewhat comes from national level news and surveys. That said, the main issue with opening schools for in-person learning or not is leadership. FCPS has...very weak leaders.

I'm also a single issue voter this time. Hurl whatever insults you want. This hybrid nonsense needs to end, and we need to be back to five days in-person next school year.

In the long term, that is true. But in the short term, it would help my mental state to "punish" the leadership who refused to allow students to go to school 5 days a week this FALL. Hopefully, I will not have to vote based on this single issue.

Back to OP's point: the election in November won't help us NEARLY as fast as the governor signing SB 1303. Bill goes into effect on July 1 if he signs it. If he adds an emergency clause (which another article indicated he WAS considering), it goes the legislature in their April session and they have to pass that. Your choice if you want to advocate for that or no.

Here's his email form link: https://www.governor.virginia.gov/constituent-services/communicating-with-the-governors-office/

Here's a sample email.

Dear Governor Northam,
As a concerned Fairfax County <parent/teacher/whatever you want here>, I am writing to ask you to sign SB 1303. In Fairfax County our children are just beginning to return to school 2 days a week after nearly a year of learning remotely. Study after study has shown that in-person learning is vastly superior to distance learning for most students and provides the quality education that our Virginia Constitution guarantees us. The legislature passed this bill with broad bipartisan support and many in both parties in Virginia support five days of in-person learning for school year 2021-2022. Please recognize this bipartisan coalition with your signature on the bill. Please also do not allow any districts waivers from the minimum number of instructional hours next fall.

Sincerely,
<YOUR NAME>

People that prefer DL have options besides using public school resources. People that want in-person don’t have options except public schools (not enough spots in privates and most people can’t afford it).

Except in this issue. One person, the governor, has the power to decide if kids are 5 days a week next fall or 4 days a week , two in person, concurrent model crap. School are a huge portion of the state and local budgets. That’s my issue. Open schools FT for my rising senior who will be faulty vaccinated by then, or I vote for someone who will. I am so angry about how this played out in FCPS. I’m so angry it’s going to take the Governor to get schools open.

I’ll deals the SB on 2023. In the meantime, the Governor is the one who can open schools. If Dems choose not to because the teachers unions fund their campaigns, I’ll choose someone who will. I’m so disappointed in Dems. They are supposed to be the party of kids and edication. If they choose not to go full start next year, that’s very eye opening.

No supporting my party when they are wrong. It makes me no better than a Trumpers.
