Tommy Wells and Ed Lazere can be annoying, but nowhere in this league. I wonder if Allen is so outsized and outrageous he will win? DC has a bit of a track record with that working

If the crime, including car theft, keeps ticking up, folks with means will either leave or leave no doubt when threatened, especially in the home. This is always the cycle that takes place. |
Agree. Or end up living in house fortresses with ADT signage bristling all about. What Charles Allen and his ilk dont understand is its not pearl clutching to enjoy city living where you can walk without mace and fear in your heart, and people treat each 9ther kindly. Id like to see more of his idead on prevention and reform but he seems to just offer a LOT of excuses. |
I don't think he is at all. He is absolutely the worst most liberal person to represent Ward 6, I am planning to do everything in my power to help elect a better politician to the council. |
That is likely true...he is a resident on the hill I believe somewhere near H. He moved a couple of years ago from 15th and D NE to a new spot. My guess is his wife got sick of the shootings on 15th and D...but what do I know? |
| The most conservative voters within Ward 6 live in Navy Yard. |
If Allen is considered bad, then Cheh should be too. OP doesn't define what their issue with Allen is. My basic issue is that we have a Council that is mostly comprised by people who are very progressive and who generally do not have a lot of real world experience running businesses or otherwise being something other than educators or activists. Yes, we have a wonderful rainy day fund and bond rating, but god forbid we get a progressive Mayor, and the whole thing could go down the drain. The continued push for more taxes and fees, particularly for small businesses, is ridiculous. |

Wonder what Charles Allen thinks about Rayful Edmonds, who was directly responsible for hundreds of murders in DC in the 1980s. His federal life sentence has been reduced, mainly because he's a huge snitch:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/rayful-edmond-prison-sentence-reduction/2021/02/23/efa9d0b6-48c2-11eb-839a-cf4ba7b7c48c_story.html (Edmonds likely isn't getting out anytime soon because Allen's idiotic law can't touch the 30-year Pennsylvania sentence for running his drug empire from prison.) |
I don't think he thinks. Or he wouldn't say dumb things like "car thieves seek warm places"
|
| If you have a neighbor/ANC commissioner/etc. who may have a more balanced approach to crime, please encourage them to consider running or at least making some serious noise. I'm tired of Charles Allen's "it's literally never their fault when they point a gun in your face" approach. |
Have you called his office to voice this? I have. They very courteously tell you how much you are misunderstanding the worthiness of his approach. I mean, I guess they have to defend it since its his platform, but I've had some pretty Seussical conversations with his staff. |

To the question about where he is on DCPS and charters... He certainly has not been a charter supporter, though he tries to hide it and a lot of charter parents aren't aware, unless they ask their school leader or the charter association, or really follow his votes. Whoever pointed out how closely he hews to the WTU party line is spot on...
I'd like to see a Black, more centrist candidate who will advance economic opportunity, focus on public safety (which can be fair - there is a middle ground between stop and frisk and abolish the police), and be open to choices in the public education system. |

^ If nothing else its pretty funny to listen to their feet paddling underwater to defend the indefensible.

Sounds good to me, and honestly--could be a moderate Democrat or Republican or Independent IMO. The platform you describe. |
Good for you for calling him. But this is why I don't even try - I just don't think it would change a thing unless he (and politicians in general) is at risk of losing his seat or comes under serious political/PR pressure. I just don't know how to get that going, especially around such a sensitive topic. Any time you bring up violent crime as a problem, you get flamed as a racist within three seconds, when all I want (and the vast majority of AA residents want) is to not worry about getting carjacked or shot at by 14-year-olds who will be released to their guardian in a day. |
