I disagree. Actually I find that I get pretty decent information on here. I find out about things here that are later verified by the school or by our principal. At any rate, this is pretty frustrating. Didn’t MCPS just implement AIM two years ago?? If MCPS would simply implement a good, solid curriculum, with reasonable implementation, it would be such an improvement. We cannot afford private, but have decided to pay for outside Math education for our kids. MCPS has dropped the ball on math education for about the past decade or so, IMO. |
Westland MS, at their information session prior to course registration, still had the following pathways: AIM6 - Algebra - Honors Geometry (for those in compacted math or at that level) Accelerated Math 6 Plus - Accelerated Math 7 Plus - Algebra Math 6 - Math 7 - Math 8 |
I did some quick searching on DCC schools, and then added other schools I could think of. This information can't easily be found on all schools' websites. What I think is strange is how they use slightly different names for all these classes. Looks like lots of DCC schools not offering AIM.

Wow, thanks for putting this together. This is an eye opener to the inequalities at MCPS. I can’t believe I actually believed that the curriculum would be the same throughout MCPS and it didn’t really matter which school we were in. |
What inequalities are you seeing? MCPS is obligated to offer all three tracks: Math 6, Math 6 plus, and AIM, and that remedial math class. Sometimes they don't put them all on their websites, and as you can see, they don't all use the same names. Parents have to ask for Algebra, and depending on the MS math department chair or Principal, that can be test-in, and they may give you more or less pushback. |
Well it's about time they stopped trying to make everything cookie cutter. Its the sad truth that kids in some schools are better prepared than others. Punishing those who work harder is going to be the death of this entire county... and I say that as a progressive liberal. What we've been doing isn't fixing the problem. |
It's obvious you don't know what a curriculum is |
Is this true? Are they obligated to have all levels at each school? |
They don’t for other classes, so I don’t see why math would be different. I’m amazed at how much variability there is between schools. |
They have the secret advanced math classes at the "W" feeder schools. |
I really do hope that all schools will have 3 options- one for AIM, one for Math 6+ (I think this has been needed for some time), and one for Math 6.
|
It’s not the norm for advanced students in our W pyramid. DC is currently in 8th and is in hon geometry, algebra is 7th. |
Middle-class kids with educated parents are ahead in math because they work harder? |
IM6 is available at my son's new middle school. The slide they shared with us (5th-grade parents) made it clear that it's for kids currently in compacted math. The other option is Math 6+. |
Math 6+ is accelerated or AIM. |
