Our school is still offering AIM6 as of last week. |
Yes, I contacted the school and was told this information. I'm interested in what others are being told for their 6th graders, particularly students who are now in compacted math. |
Math 6+ was originally presented as being *in addition to* AIM. What do you mean that the kids would be behind, by the way? Algebra in 9th is the national norm for "on track" kids, and Algebra in 8th is the national norm for "advanced" kids. |
Which school? |
You must be new here. |
If this is true, what happens at MS magnets? Do those students take Algebra in 8th grade over there too? If not, then how does MCPS justify this year's lottery-chosen students being one year ahead in math? |
Fair enough. I’m PP and we are being offered AIM. |
SSIMS math pathways for 6th graders starting in fall '21 are:
LearnZillion Math 6-->on track for Algebra 1 in 9th LearnZillion Math 7-->on track for Algebra 1 in 8th Applied Investigations in Math 6 (AIM)-->on track for Algebra 1 in 7th |
Just FYI- I am a compacted 5/6 teacher and on a Facebook message board with others who teach the course. None of us have heard definitive plans for next year. MCPS is still giving guidance to middle schools, so don’t be surprised if you see/hear changes from your school even if something is already published. |
Many privates don't do Algebra in 6/7 and usually 8/9. Parents complained, MCPS listened. Now many kids will suffer. |
AIM is being offered. They are calling it something different to go along with the new curriculum. |
This is not true. It is still called AIM. However, a new class is also being added for this year for the first time. It is Math 6+ and it tracks kids to do Algebra in 8th (AIM puts kids in algebra in 7th). The confusion is that not all schools are offering both Math 6+ and AIM. |
Our MS is offering Math 6 and AIM. It is recommended that the students who are struggling in compact math take Math 6 next year. |
At those magnets, according to posts here only a select few take Algebra in 6th. Many take Algebra in 7th. They are just changing the names of the classes to go along with LearnZillion math. Stop freaking out about it. |
This is not true. There are schools that are stating that they will not allow children to take AIM next year, which will take away a pathway for Algebra in 7th. Some schools will still allow it, while others will not. This is not equitable and has nothing to do with Algebra in 6th. Hopefully, the county will create a clear set of standards to place children in each class rather than letting individual schools decide. |
