High School magnet results are out

Ditto.

Not all well qualified kids go to a MS magnet. There are more qualified MS students than there are HS spaces at Blair/RM/PV. That is why they have been adding more regional programs. Being in a MS magnet is not a guarantee of HS magnet acceptance. All high schools either have their own special programs for advanced students, AP, or IB programs.

Slightly off tangent, but does MCPS provide transportation or are you supposed to get to school on your own as is the case with lottery magnet programs?

There is transportation from hubs - so not as close as your neighborhood bus stop - you may have to drop him at a local school - or he'll walk there and catch the bus.

I think it is harder to get in from the middle school magnets, just like it’s harder to get into the middle school magnets after CES.

Agree. But what is the f point of going to MS magnet then???

Please calm the f down. A relative of ours went to a magnet and then to home HS (says she was sick of the commute but maybe she simply didn't get in, we didn't pry). Graduated with great grades and is now at a good college. And her commute really was a lot shorter.

The f point on going to MS magnet is to receive more rigorous instruction in middle school; and that's all. It's not a sure way to Harvard.

Same stress as during the transition from CES to magnet middle.

They really should open more seats in all the selective programs...

I'm don't think that's true. I thought a reasonably high percentage of MS magnet kids were accepted into HS magnets. In a regular year, at least. And we don't have any data about this year.

To learn to research, analyze, and write at a higher level than they would be taught at a regular MS. To be taught to solve complex math problems and apply the concepts to a variety of situations. To challenge themselves, to stretch.

I felt the same way when my kid did very well at a CES and was not able to attend a MS magnet. But now he'll be attending RMIB. There is definitely a randomness to all of it.

These kids will be very well prepared for AP classes.

Over 100

Over 100

I thought it was 100 OOB and 25 IB.

Hi, I logged into parentvue, but didn’t see anything in email or elsewhere. I did receive a notice that DD’s app was properly submitted back in the fall. Any thoughts?

Anonymous wrote:DS is in “wait pool” for Poolesville. I read the letter but don’t really understand the difference between “wait pool” and “wait list”. It also isn’t clear if there is a wait list and pool or only a pool.

Can someone explain? Thanks

There is not a list and people are not ranked. A pool is just that. Everyone has equal chance. My suggestion and advice would be to advocate really hard, get teachers and principals to write for you, send new information in etc. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
