Vessel sinks

A lot of vessel sinks are poorly done, with a high bowl and short water faucet.

That is probably why you hate them. There are some very well done ones with lower vessels and higher faucets that work even for my super short MIL.

I often think of this in reference to vessel sinks:

Vessel sinks look like a total hassle to keep clean. They look neat in commercial spaces where they are cleaned daily, but having to clean inside and out just seems annoying.

I'm laughing because I hate pedestal sinks too, and removed three of that exact pedestal in PP's photo, and put in a vessel in the powder room and a normal vanity in the upstairs baths, because we needed storage and a place to put the soap! Also, the easiest sink in the house to clean is the vessel. I don't know why people would think it is hard - - do you have trouble cleaning your pasta bowl?

Yes, that one is ugly.

After watching this episode, I am convinced they are something designers talk people into because they like the opportunity to select a decorative vessel sink instead a more utilitarian sink. This designer kept talking about how the sink and fixtures were “like jewelry” for the bathroom. It’s a classic form over function choice. Though they are so impractical that it makes them ugly to me.

Agree with PP that they are at least less offensive in a powder room where the sole purpose of the sink is to wash hands. But even there I’d prefer a pedestal. I don’t even like vessel sinks in restaurant bathrooms![/quote

I don't care for 98% of vessel sinks, although I'm sure there are a few in powder rooms that are ok. I really hate pedestal sinks. No, they don't make your room look bigger, they show the plumbing always, and they look cheap. Just...ugh. (Also--can we just stop with the beadboard? So dated and trite)

We had a sink like that in our old house. I hated it because of all the edges and corners -- they gathered grime and sucked to wipe down.

Agree, and I can't imagine someone who thinks a simple bowl vessel sink is hard to clean would want to clean that!

I'm particularly fond of a classic pedestal in a bathroom with dark walls and vintage tile, with kind of ornate fixtures. Kind of like this:

Why do the light fixture and the mirror and the faucet all have different finishes aaaaaaaargh

Topic? I also hate vessel sinks.

To add visual interest. You’re not supposed to match everything.

Like the interest of "how long until that vase falls in the sink and shatters?" Illustrates beautifully why pedestal sinks are impractical for normal household use.

Ive seen some that were partially sunken, like a basin, but not all the way. They are less splashy for shorter folks.

I think these are really nice.

Yeah, I hate them, too.

Yes to both of these! Water everywhere and banging my rings always.

How are you getting water everywhere? How is water spilling out? Makes no sense.

Funny - I love them...millions of choices and styles. It never makes a mess on the surrounding counters. Love it.

Because there’s always that little tiny space between the bottom of the bowl. All the way around.

And PP complaining about pedestal sinks and beadboard as “dated,” that’s like complaining about headlights as dated as old fashioned.

Is your pasta bowl permanently cemented in one place on your counter, or can you pick it up?
