Lol, I believe USNews has Columbia ahead of Yale and Princeton. |
Umm, no - unless you think JHU or George Tech is more impressive than Penn. |
| This thread is so stupid - there is only one Ivy League and this Ivy Plus stuff is nonsense. People know there are lots of good schools - they are just not Ivy League and that’s okay. Yeesh. |
Cal tech is more impressive than penn/brown/Cornell. Stanford is as impressive as any ivy. The Ivy League is a sports league that people use as short hand for elite school, but that doesn’t mean anyone is dumb enough to think all ivies are better than all other schools |
I’m glad that it works that way for you. As a Black female with a PhD from an excellent school, it is usually the reassuringly Ivy League undergraduate degree that gets my foot in the door — and that other people often bring up. Even if it’s a condescending: “So tell me, how did You get to... , err, how did you like it at.....” Perhaps because the people asking don’t view it as “sort of expected” for people who look like me. The people who care about my graduate degree tend to be people in my field. |
| What a dumb thread! OP is clearly not smart enough to get into any ivys |
It depends if someone is using "Ivy League" literally or as a shorthand/substitute for elite institution, and people use it both ways. |
LOL okay JHU booster. Yeah, right. |
Cal tech is a one-trick pony, in the same league as JHU. All that a student has to do is be a STEM geek. While this is an accomplishment, this type would not make it in the holistic setting that is Ivy. |
But when used, it us usually about social class, not academics. |
Is it hating to state a fact? It is a sports league. (You added "just"). |
|
These threads always come across as multi-act plays where someone is trying to advance the notion that a school like JHU is comparable to an Ivy. You can’t just come out and make that pitch, so you have to start off by denigrating the Ivies and go from there.
You care too much to convince others they should care so little. |
Well said. |
It's hating to trivialize common meaning to make your derogatory and bitter point, yes. You'll be happier if you let it go, you know. |
| My DC did not apply to any Ivies, though encouraged to do so by the college counselor. The reasoning was that she didn’t want to be pre-judged by where she went to school. People have associations in their minds as well as stereotypes of elitists. Haaaahvahd in a snooty accent is what people think. The connections could help within that elitist group, but that’s not where she wants to be. The constant competition and need to prove one’s self at Ivies seems toxic. |
