The overcrowded McLean and Chantilly pyramids currently send the most kids to TJ, and will see an influx of students under a lottery, but FCPS isn't planning for an addition at either school. Conversely, West Potomac and Justice are among the pyramids that send the fewest kids to TJ, and will send more under a lottery, but FCPS is building expensive additions at both schools. FCPS planning is a mess.

2020-21 TJ students by base high school pyramid:

McLean 190
Chantilly 155
Langley 152
Oakton 140
Westfield 92
Woodson 81
Madison 70
Marshall 68
Fairfax 48
South Lakes 47
Lake Braddock 42
Centreville 40
Annandale 39
Robinson 33
Falls Church 25
West Springfield 24
Edison 21
Hayfield 21
Herndon 21
South County 21
West Potomac 19
Justice 11
Lewis 11
Mount Vernon 7

Any clue if we can see the breakdown of the applicants from each school? I'm guessing McLean, Chantilly, Langley, etc. by far have the most applicants. I'd be surprised if any of the schools lower on the list even had many kids interested in going. But that is just a guess on my part and I'd like to see the data.

I doubt they collect data on the number of applicants to TJ who reside within the boundaries of the specific high schools. FCPS does collect information on the number of students applying and accepted from different FCPS middle schools, but they usually don't publicize it, although they may have included it in some of the recent reports to the School Board relating to potential changes in the TJ admissions process. And sometimes groups like FCAG (Fairfax County Association for the Gifted) submit FOIA requests for that information and then post it on their website.

This is the last such summary by middle school on FCAG's web site for the TJ Class of 2022 (8th grade students admitted in the spring of 2018): http://www.fcag.org/documents/TJHSST%20All%20Middle%20Schools%20Class%20of%202022.pdf

It's sad to look at the agenda for tonight's meeting and see how rushed and incoherent some of the School Board member motions are relating to TJ.

For example, Tholen and Pekarsky have an amendment to make sure that the top 1.5% of kids at every middle school in FCPS are "eligible for admission" to TJ, but what does that even mean? Does it mean they get slots, or just make it through an initial round of screening, or can just apply like any other kids with the minimum qualifications?

And Keys Gamarra has a follow-on motion that is one big run-on sentence that includes concepts like "adequate progress on diversity," even though the main motions bend over backwards to emphasize that the new admissions process, whatever it is, must be "race-neutral." So how do they assess what "adequate progress" might be if the new process explicitly disclaims any race-based targets?

McLaughlin was right - Brabrand rushed this through and now they are all confused and pointing fingers in every which direction. FCPS is a shit show.

The SEPTA commenter praised FCPS and the Board for having a public hearing. They did that with extremely short notice. Makes it even more stunning that they didn’t bother having a public hearing about the drastic changes proposed at TJ.

Will this be the type of meeting that goes on for hours? I don’t want to keep watching if they aren’t voting until after midnight.

Wait, it looks like TJ topic was earlier in agenda than the capital plan. But they arenow talking about capital plan. Did they already discuss TJ topic?
