| What's the deal with admissions for the school year starting inthe fall? |
They're literally deciding that tonight. All the earlier meetings weren't enough to either decide or decide to table the conversation. |
| Oh wow, okay. We recently found out we may move back the area and have a rising 9th grader. |
|
This plan is going to explode the student populations at Langley and McLean. The staff refuse to acknowledge this.
From a next steps document: Please do analysis of the ramifications to our base high schools given a new TJ admissions process. This data driven research will include both an analysis of increased student enrollment at the high schools and the need for additional courses in advanced math, science, and computer programming such as: differential equations, probability theory, quantum physics, machine learning, post AP courses, etc. Staff will need to do an analysis of course offerings at TJHSST and determine the best way to provide opportunity and access more broadly. This could be through a combination of school based optional course offerings, inclusion in the Online Campus, or Dual Enrollment agreements with university partners. |
Wow. McLean and Chantilly (who I think are currently the most overcrowded HS in FCPS without a plan in place) really needs some help now - Langley might be able to absorb. |
DP. So in other words, FCPS staff provided only a brief response relating to course offerings, and ignored the Board members (think it was Tholen and Pekarsky) with respect to the request for information about the anticipated impact on enrollments. I don't know how some Board members, in particular, could feel comfortable approving a new approach to TJ admissions without this information. |
| If you talk to the people at the TJ AAG and the Fairfax NAACP about this, their response is that you're getting in the way and FCPS can figure that all out later. They don't care about anything other than getting the change they are now seeking at TJ. |
strange how the top and bottom list correspond so well to school affluence. it's almost like TJ's detractors hadve a point |
Right. No plan whatsoever. |
Let's assume they have a point and that FCPS should change the TJ admissions process. They still ought to be ready to address the impact on other pyramids. |
| I would also wager that Langley will be in more demand than it already is once families with highly gifted children have been “lotteried out” of TJ. Langley can only absorb so much. |
Any clue if we can see the breakdown of the applicants from each school? I'm guessing McLean, Chantilly, Langley, etc. by far have the most applicants. I'd be surprised if any of the schools lower on the list even had many kids interested in going. But that is just a guess on my part and I'd like to see the data. |
Or the rigor of the HS. |
Or the education of the parents. Well educated parents care about their kids’ education and move to better school districts. Not everything is about money. Or race. It may be about education! |
I doubt they collect data on the number of applicants to TJ who reside within the boundaries of the specific high schools. FCPS does collect information on the number of students applying and accepted from different FCPS middle schools, but they usually don't publicize it, although they may have included it in some of the recent reports to the School Board relating to potential changes in the TJ admissions process. And sometimes groups like FCAG (Fairfax County Association for the Gifted) submit FOIA requests for that information and then post it on their website. |
