This is not a good sign for schools reopening

I would really like my kids back in regular school. Virtual learning is not going well at my house. But unlike other folks here, I am not optimistic about hybrid learning. I expect it will be a mess and destabilise what we have right now. I’m desperately hoping that they can speed up the vaccine rollout so we can get back to semi-normal by late spring but that may just be a pipe dream

Yep. I’ve been a supporter of reopening this whole time, but if we’re given a hybrid option, we’ll decline. My kid is at a camp that will not offer part time. So given the choice of part-time school and sucking at my job vs. full-time camp, I’ll take camp. It’s better for my kid and for my family’s finances.

I think we all need to get used to the fact that this entire year is a wash, honestly. Hopefully they can go back in the fall.

Yep. A daycare that has expanded to offer care for older kids. They facilitate the kids’ online classes. There are tons of these throughout the city.

Our camp has specifically said it won’t offer part time because it is set up to have groups of kids not mix with others. So it won’t offer part-time if schools go hybrid, which means we won’t elect hybrid and will choose all virtual so my kid can keep going to camp. We need the supervisor so we can work.

But generally I agree. All these pods and cohorts are BS. Kids should have (and could have) been in school safely this whole time.

I WANT my children back in the classroom. Distance learning is a poor substitute and I worry about what my children aren't learning. That said, I'm a realist and have accepted that they will not be back in the school building this school year. Surrender the fantasy, people.

The year is a wash. I wish schools would simply decide that EVERYONE will repeat their grade next year. A pandemic is a once a century event and our country has failed miserably to manage our way through it. We are going to have a ‘9/11s worth’ of people dying daily for the next several weeks.

There is no public grieving or even a moments is silence for the dead. No real economic support got families that are struggling to survive. Personally I could GAF about school this year - our family has lost 2 people to this disease, one was a health worker. I just want to get through this.

I'm a teacher and I feel this way too, we should stop trying to pretend kids are learning. But you have to be practical about the impossibility that the current grade level will be repeated en masse - the parents of rising K students are SOL and going to have to wait another year? What about parents who don't want to their kids to repeat? There are endless scenarios and stakeholders and it is just not going to happen even if it makes sense on the personal level.

Academics are not the biggest problem here. Child care and socialization for young kids is critical. Why can’t we run something that looks like the summer DCPS enrichment for kids. Outside play, reading stories, pretend play, some reading and math to retain what they learned last year.

Creativity would be fantastic

I saw an article where they were doing “night school” for kinder. 6 to 8 pm so parents could be there w the kid.

Before the whine - then you would move dinner up, kid would go to bed later and sleep later, etc

Omg you have other kids - yes just like juggling soccer practice and other things you make changes and adjust
