2021 DMV area Boys Outlook

None of the athletic directors or schools can agree. Good luck in DC area. Way too liberal!

I’m an old guy and have seen plenty of IAC seasons. Lately I have noticed a trend with Prep. A lot of crowing about how good freshmen and soph classes are but it does not seem to translate into IAC championships. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that many of there kids entering Prep are already a year older than their peer group. There always seem to be a big jump between 15-17 for male athletes and many of there Prep kids are getting that bounce earlier, hence the early hype.

All of the good lax (sports) schools have older rosters. It has more to do with coaching than anything else. They had a really good coach who won championships but got himself fired and they've had middling coaches since.

Mater DEI pipeline feeds to Prep. That school produces most holdbacks and then they go to Prep. No other school in area is in the same league as Prep with holdbacks.

Its the same story every year from the GP Dads, the Lil Hoyas can do no wrong.

If Bullis wins, its because they have lower academic standards and its easier to admit student athletes there.

When Landon was at the top of the IAC, it was because they were recruiting too hard.

It's a moot point this year anyway. I am guessing there won't be organized school sports this year unless something incredible happens to change the DC public's mind.

-Good post. I had heard about Mater Delay but wasn't aware many of these kids feed into Prep. Prohibe.

Swarthmore (Centennial Conference) just canceled spring 2021 sports, and with the NESCACs deciding to cancel all winter sports, and saying that the spring sports are TBD, we should brace ourselves for our sons getting screwed out of their second straight season of high schooL lacrosse.

God, I hope I am wrong.

Agreed..lets hope we have a season! Definitely feel like Fall and Winter should just be cancelled. Sucks that spring sports had to cancel this year and then be penalized by a condensed 21 season if it happens at all.

its such a crap shoot if there is even a 2021 season at all.

I don't think any private school league will sanction official "league sports".

You could see a few privates go rouge and play ad hoc games with whoever they can find.

Why do you believe this?

As I see it, private schools have been the ones leading/pushing for in-school instruction, and I would see them doing the same for sports. I haven't seen any signs from private schools that they will be less likely to play than public schools. On social media I have seen private schools having practices and conditioning sessions in line with the adjusted schedules.

VHSL still seems to be moving forward with public school sports in VA.

The schools are barely in session now and with predicted rates going up I just don’t see the schools agreeing. Sorry to tell you straight up. But doubt there will be a season. Sad for the kids

Bullis loves to crow about how great they are. A couple of years ago they lost five games, including one to Gonzaga, and claimed to be Geico National Champions. I think they have won the IAC twice. Maybe three times. Prep 10 times (I think). Landon 31 times (I think) StSStA once or twice.

Someone mentioned the Landon Headmaster changing. I think he has been there for about four to six years now. You can probably expect a lot more uncertainty at Bullis. They had a renegade headmaster who was pretty focused on winning in athletics and turned out to be a snake oil salesman, somewhat like our president. They have a new head of school, and we will all have to see what they do.

I agree with the comments on Prep. They have been building for a long time, but ... this is the next greatest class in ...

Giblin was a hell of a lacrosse coach.

Don't count out Landon. Two years ago they were in a complete rebuild and lost three overtime games to Prep and Bullis.

Last year they were likely to be the class of the IAC despite a early season one goal loss to SJC.

Don't count out StSStA either. They are always good though sometimes they lack depth. If they stay healthy... They are well coached and they get better, about four goals better, from the beginning to the end of the season every year.

Funny how Gonzaga and now SJC get a lot of run, but Landon is 50/50 with them both over the past four games, and it is very lopsided historically.

I just hope they all get to play.

Great post and I appreciate the insight. My son recently graduated from an IAC team and loved his lacrosse experience. He opted to play club in college once he learned the high level of commitment needed at the D1 level.

You are spot on with your analysis with all of the teams. There is a ton of parity in the DC area these days and the I really don't think the #1 team in the region (whoever that maybe this season GP, Bullis or GZ) is more than few goals better than the next crop down.

One team that should be added into the discussion is PVI..... with their new campus out in Loudon Country they will gradually be able to lure kids from the greater Leesburg area who are looking for private alternatives.

Lets hope at the very least both the WCAC and IAC can have some type of league only schedule this Spring.

The rising parity is great for the game in the DMV. So many more talented players than 5 years ago.

And with more and more kids starting to play the game is poised for even more improvement in the quality of play.
