Well, the difference is that he used to have two parents in his household and now he has just me. It's a lot to manage. It would help a lot to have him drive. And where did I ever suggest he should get ahead of others? I don't think any tax paying citizen--who is going to work everyday, during a pandemic, by the way--should accept just waiting 4 to 5 months while employees of the DMV stay home and get paid, by us. |
I thought I mentioned it in the OP, but he would like to get a second job (right now, he's a camp counselor and can ride his bike), but he was offered a position on the weekends that is not accessible by bike and I work odd hours and cannot drive him. At this point, I'm paying insurance on his father's car that is now just sitting not being driven because of the 4 month wait to get his license. And yes, if there's school, he will attend. And no, if he stays home, he'll be by himself. A single mom typically can't afford a governess. Do they have those anymore? |
+1. You’re exactly right OP. These sanctimonious posters are missing the point. My drivers license expires next month; I can’t get an appointment until October for a simple renewal. We should all be putting pressure on DC government to get moving on this matter. It’s completely unacceptable |

Here's an idea: if DC DMV workers are all claiming high health risks and not coming into work, DC needs to issue provisional licenses to all drivers who have had their permits for 6 months or more and can prove 60+ hours of driving, until such time that road tests can be adequately administered. It's that simple.
DC already puts teen drivers behind their peers in the region by not allowing permits until 16 years and licenses for 6 more months. To make them wait yet another 4 or 5 months for licenses--while at the same time severely limiting Metro bus routes--is crippling their ability to join the work force and support their families by getting themselves to where they need to be. Bowser needs to get with it and become a true problem solver. |
Is this what the workers are saying? Are they still getting paid? Sounds like a way to get paid without working to me? We need to put pressure on someone. Banks are able to open? Why can't they? Limit the amount of people, put up plastic shields, whatever precautions necessary, but get back to work and service the community! |
Of course they're getting paid. Agree, need to put pressure on to open the DMVs to full service. Please contact your city council member about this! |
How many people a day does a certification staffer need to sit in a closed car with a different person? Seriously, OP and the others complaining need to back way off. |
Strange. In the past two months we were able to: 1) upgrade from provisional license to full license 2) renew drivers license 3) get new learners permit Made appointments on the DMV website. Went to the service centers at appointed dates/times with proper documentation. No muss or fuss. In a month, the one who got the learners permit will sign up for the drivers test, wait their turn and hopefully pass to get their provisional license. IOW, there is always a back up for the road test, so sign up early and wait your turn. |
It's five minutes! With masks. Nearly impossible to pass on any viral load in that short amount of time. Put the windows down. They just want to get paid to stay home. |
|
Completely agree. Is PP equally concerned with taxi/ uber drivers, driving school operators and others who "need to sit in a closed car with a different person?" These people, I might add, do NOT get paid if they are not in their cars every day. But rest assured that your "certification staffer" is well compensated, working or not. The party's over, people. It's time for the DC government to get back to work. |
| How did he get to school last year, you entitled twit? (not the word I really wanted to use) |
We're in the middle of an unprecedented global health emergency. Sorry your precious tax dollars aren't yielding the quality of service you expect from underpaid civil servants who don't want to put their health at risk to stamp your little twats learner's permit. |
DC government is still working. Or has your trash not been picked up since March? |

This week, my SIL got her DL renewed (new Real ID) in five minutes at the G’town DMV. She made an appt a few weeks ago.
