If you read the story you would see the kids were staying together in the same rental unit.

So, no pool spread or beach spread. These kids slept together and traveled together.

The kids in these stories were sharing group rental homes. Their indoor exposure was almost surely dramatically higher than their outdoor exposure.

The CDC allows all of these activities if your area is in the green/open phase. The virus is going to be around for a long time. People don't really get that the main goal was to delay and prevent a surge that would completely overwhelm our hospitals. The goal was never to prevent people from ever getting the virus.

There is also a risk to you and your children's mental health by staying isolated for several months on end. That is not to be just idly dismissed, there is an impact, even though you may not clearly see it.

If you or your family get sick, is it in your best interests? Not saying that the risk is high.

We are following restrictions put in place by the government. We are not going to hide indoors for the rest of the year. If there is another stay at home order, we will follow it but we are not going to make decisions based on the opinions of our most anxious neighbor. Sorry.

You are way over-reacting and just being mean and selfish yourself. We have been totally hunkering down and following beyond every guideline and requirement. But we are considering an outdoor camp for a few days for our elementary schooler, not because we need the childcare but because it seems safe.

I'm in close in MD and I think our community has done great and the numbers reflect that.

I kept thinking maybe this argument was just rationalizing on our part in order to justify sending our kids out. But my teenage DD started sports practice last week and after just a few practices, I realized last night how much more better her spirits are. She's much more motivated, and I'm seeing her anxiety and depression improving already. I think I really diminished just how bad the isolation has been for her. One anecdote, but I am certain she is not alone.

I agree. The public health framework in general is benefits vs. harm. For a while, the risk of harm from social isolation was vastly outweighed by the benefits of staying home and isolating. That time, or now, at least for those of posting in certain areas (I'm in MD and our numbers are trending in the right direction), the benefit risk calculation has changed a bit.

We will not be going to restaurants, gyms, hair salons, metro, the office, planes, etc. but yes we will start going to routine overdue dr. and dentist appointments and we are allowing outdoor small get-togethers (remaining socially distant) for ourselves and our kids. No indoor guests. We will be following guidelines for Montgomery County when it's time for school.

Simply saying everything that is not being locked inside your home is dangerous like the OP is doing is not smart or sane.

I have plenty of friends who are doing just this, but then are appalled when others have a socially distant visit with a small number of friends or family.

People are very judgmental of anyone behaving in ways that are different than how they are behaving - and I think this goes across the spectrum, for those being the most careful to the least. We're all selfish in ways, we're all judgmental in ways, and we aren't doing ourselves any favors.

I do tend to agree with you on the grocery store delivery and putting the risk on others, and we do our own grocery shopping. That said someone else said if I am purchasing food, I’m still part of the problem and I do sadly agree with that. I don’t think conditions are good in these meat plants or for migrant workers living in close quarters.
