Yes, laws are passed. There had been previous attemots to legislate the removal of the statue. They failed. You keep trying. Thats called being a nation of laws. We dont all get what we want when we want automatically or by force. Thats called anarchy, or in the hands of a few - oligarchy, faciscim or dictatorship.

Sigh. So, segregated schools, separate but equal- Not, with all deliberate speed, whites only real estate covenants... all of these things have been what this “land of laws” has meant for some of us. So that phrase might not garner the reverence that you seem to have for it. For many minorities— “keep trying” makes what you view as “anarchy” look quite attractive — and possibly the only realistic option. To paraphrase Kimberly Jones: Be grateful that we want equality— and not revenge.

Yup.

DC had wanted that statute down for years. Its on federal property and I think it needs Congressional approval to be removed. Congress won’t give it for reasons surpassing understanding but arising out of the completely dysfunctional nature of the DC-federal relationship. Its behond stupid the city has been stuck with this offensive statue for so long.

Correct - the statute was like five feet from MPD headquarters. DC has been trying for decades to get it removed. Thanks Zoomers.

So you're completely ignorant of all the efforts to desegregate, empower, create equity and progress that have been made? And now you're taking the law into your own hands? You never heard of the loving case, busing, affirmative action, priority hiring, hate crime laws, small business loans, homestead act, summer jobs program, black politicians in every elected office in land? Some efforts worked, some failed, you try try again. Thats what every person (human) in a nation of law does. Democracy is the best option of imperfect systems. But you just want to burn it down. Hope your kids enjoy the cinders. What are you going to rebuild when you've destroyed the best chance we have for a country of 350 million to live work love and hope together through a foundation of law and process. You think living in our tribes waving our torches at each other will be an improvement? Again, total ignorance fail.

Yes, in other places where the city council unanimously voted to remove a statue from their own city, which is what happened here, they’d be allowed to. Not the case bc of, frankly, racist attitudes toward our local government by a congress. Pike was a KKK founder. I don’t believe in “erasing history”—this IS history. But up an interpretive sign about what used to be there, and what was going on Juneteenth 2020 to finally topple it.

Then get involved in city politics and work to empower your city council / divest congress/ I know, it's complicated and hard and takes work. So much easier to beat up a statue.
Let's put up interpretive signs on the businesses whose windows were smashed as well. How about we put up interpretive signs for murder victims, commemorating what used to be there? Lawlessness is made all the better with interpretive signs.

Speaking of lawlessness and beating, let's talk about police beating people up.

Do you know how hard many people have been working for years to get DC equal representation? There is no way Republicans will ever let it happen. GTFO with your self-righteous attitude.

Yup. I don’t like chaos but this statue was long overdue to be removed. The guy was truly despicable.

The dude fought for the Indian nations in numerous lawsuits against the US government. He also lead Indian Calvary during the Civil War for the confederacy.

The fighting for the confederacy (traitor to nation) isn’t cancelled out by helping Native Americans. Do you think Nazi doctors’ “discoveries” make the experiments on concentration camps okay?

Stone Mountain needs to go. Protestors have been there for years.

Yes,that's called being in a democracy with different political persuasions. Not everyone is going to automatically agree with you. You have to convince them or win a majority --hopefully based on the superiority of your platform and proposal. But go ahead and burn it all down and hand a pile of burning rubble to your kids and grandkids. That's clearly the better way.

I’m the PP. Yes, I know all of those things quite well. I’m a third generation Black Washingtonian. How come you didn’t bother to mention things like the way Woodrow Wilson “enhanced” segregation in DC and the Federal government? Or how white flight to the suburbs after the schools in DC supposedly desegregated left the schools impoverished? Most up of the programs you mention disproportionately benefit white people. White women have been the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action, for example. And guess who gets those business loans? The homestead act is great - for those who own their homes. Again, guess who this has disproportionately benefited?

You don’t know what I want. You have absolutely no idea what I want. So please stop insolently imagining that you do.
As to the “torches” - it’s your folks waving around those tikis.

The “total ignorance fail” thing is clearly something you’re intimately familiar with.

With you on those interpretive signs. As to the empowering part — I’ll talk with my Representatives in Congress! Oh, wait....!
