Is walking 5 miles a day ok?

As a runner, I think that if you're happy walking 5 miles, there's no real reason to switch to running. Running is harder on the joints than walking, and as we get older, that's a bigger deal. (running = more impact.)

My goal is usually to cover about 8-10 miles by some means. On running days, I usually run 5-6 miles and walk another 4-5. On non-running days, I walk 5 miles and bike 5 miles.

How long do you usually exercise each day?

To be completely honest, OP. -- it's not good. How on earth would you think walking is okay? For optimal health, embark in a sedentary life, with little to no motion. smh.

If you want to step up your walking try the app 99walks. Has sessions you can listen to while walking with intervals etc.

This. It’s not so much about distance as it is heart rate. A slow ambling 5 mile walk is ok. A 3 pike power walk is better.

As long as you're walking briskly and getting your heart rate up, keep it up! Walking is great exercise -- you don't need special clothing or equipment, just a comfortable pair of shoes; it's easy on your joints; you can do it anywhere; and it's great for your mood!

Nice flex, OP. You hit me subtle with the "oh is this OK" brag variety.

Op here. I don’t understand this. I’m reading the other thread where people are posting about their 20k+steps a day and I’m feeling like my 5miles isn’t enough. I wanted to get input.

7 years ago, I lost 20 lbs walking 5 miles a day. Not speed walking, but faster than a jog. I started with 1 Mike and was at 5 miles in about two months. It took a year to lose the weight completely, but I started losing within two weeks.

PP is just being snarky

5 miles is actually really good. That's at least 10k steps a day, probably more.

Increasing your mileage to 10 miles won't provide a huge return for the amount of time it would take. You're better off sticking to 3-5 miles and throwing in some strength training.

Mileage alone isn't going to make you lose weight. I run 30 miles a week and I'm still overweight
