Elissa Silverman and BLM Anti-Semitism Controversy

Anonymous
I believe there is controversy because many BLM supporters are anti-Semitic, unfortunately. That is something Jews are very familiar with.

Wow! This is antisemitism in great form. Ding. Ding. Ding. Let’s see if anyone condemns this.

There is a dark history of anti-Semitism among *some* AAs—Louis Farrakhan has had resonance among some—and I hope the response from BLM wasn’t a reflection of that.

There is also a strain of anti-Semitism among *some* parts of the progressive movement, as an outgrowth of understandable dislike of cruel Israeli policies towards Palestinians.

I hope that exchange does not reflect any of those undercurrents.

Now who is stirring the pot!!!

She was immediately attacked due to making her support for BLM "transactional". However, I don't read her tweet as offering her support for BLM in return for their support against anti-Semitism. Rather, I see her offering her support unconditionally and only expressing her hope that BLM will join her. Never mind that BLM should be opposing anti-Semitism regardless of what Silverman does.

Silverman quickly apologized:

But that hasn't stopped the attacks:

I think the appropriate response by BLM and its supporters to Silverman's initial tweet would be to thank her for her support and assure her that they will always stand by her against anti-Semitism. These attacks on her are very discouraging and disappointing.

Rereading again, and it was conditional or bitter, she apologized as she should have, Let's move on!

1. There's an implied accusation that they wouldn't support antisemitism.
2. She's centering herself when right now we're supposed to raising and centering black voices.

I think point 2 is the issue. Time and place.

Fine. If you think that is what she is doing, criticize her for that. Don't issue statements saying that she is being transactional when she clearly wasn't.

I’m curious: How do you read / understand her use of the word “eventually “? Without knowing anything about any backstories, when I got to that, it seriously took me aback.

I understood "eventually" to mean "sometime in the future".

And the unstated portion of that statement is an insinuation that that has not been the case in the past.

It very openly has not been the case in the past on the council.

Trayvon White said some very anti-Semitic stuff, echoing some of the most terrible BS NoI/Farrakhan anti-Semitic conspiracies.

Then, some of Bowser’s allies signaled they agreed with him.

Then he apologized but bailed on a tour of the Holocaust Museum.

Then Bowser didn’t really come out strongly in support of Jews.

Then Silverman ran an anti-corruption campaign, probably somewhat justified, that went right at Bowser and her allies.

Then Bowser supported someone to run against Silverman.

Then Silverman won her election.

Then Janeese Lewis-George beat Bowser’s ally Todd running in Bowser’s home turf.

Now Bowser is looking like a lame duck and Silverman and her allies are ascendent.

There are real issues with anti-Semitism around the Council and Bowser and really White too did not address them well.
And there are political issues too between Silverman and Bowser.

Together these issues produced Silverman’s tweet. McDuffie is just being a jerk mischaracterizing what Silverman actually said.

Did you have anything to actually support such a sweeping generalization?
This is really wasting what could be an unparalleled opportunity for constructive conversations and positive change.

This is something that PP may have heard from Bari Weiss and Bret Stephens.
This is because Weiss and Stephens lie to advance the agenda of Republicans, which is helped by splitting Jews away from the Democratic Party.

The idea above about BLM and anti-Semitism is, factually, something that Weiss has written about.
PP, please don’t read this tripe from conservatives arguing in bad faith like Weiss. It’s not helpful.

Storm in a teacup. Foolish of her peers to show their true colors for something so small. Also, no one appreciates every one using the BLM platform for scoring points. Bad form. She explained her tweet and that what matters.

People need to really go after some really racist people who are threatening people. Lets get this woman off the streets.

Just in case you were wondering why Silverman is concerned abut anti-Semitism.

I’m not antisemitistic, I’m just being for real.

I agree that the black community needs to do better snot anti Semitism. But her tweet was weird and irrelevant.

Like someone else said upthread, she apologized — let’s move on!

Honestly, why do you think this? The Jewish community has been an ally to the Black community.

DP: I .am really trying NOT to fan the flames, but the "Jewish community" and the "Black community" are not monolithic entities. Sweeping generalizations really don't serve anybody well.

I hate to break it to you, but characterizing all Jews negativily is text book anti-Semitism. If you actually believe what you wrote, you are indeed anti-Semitic. Also ignorant but the two often go together.
